Bolivian Anarchism and Indigenous Resistance: Interview with Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui
III_Cumbre__final_.jpgThe South American nation of Bolivia has filled the headlines of the global press with their fight against water privatization, struggle for nationalization of gas, non-compliance with free trade policies, and the election of South America’s first indigenous president, Evo Morales. These struggles are rooted in the long history of indigenous resistance to colonialism and imperialism in Bolivia. In an interview conducted during her recent stay in Pittsburgh, subaltern theorist, Aymara sociologist, and historian Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui discussed Bolivian Anarchism, the health benefits of the Coca plant, and the Cocaleros' (Coca Growers') fight for sovereignty.

Immigration Raids Create Emotional Trauma and Economic Distress for Children, New Report FInds
199190_IMG_0095.JPGBoston, MA - The Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) and the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NSWMA) presented a new report by the Urban Institute and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), which examines how recent immigration enforcement actions have affected the wellbeing of children of immigrants in the U.S.

Researchers found that for every two people detained in immigration enforcement operations, one child is left behind. Two-thirds of these children are U.S. citizens and a similar share is under age ten. The report details the consequences of immigration enforcement operations on children's psychological, educational, economic, and social wellbeing. It also outlines the heavy burden that workplace raids are placing on communities, school systems, social service providers, and religious institutions, which have acted as first responders for families in these incidents.

Reclaiming the Streets One Honk at a Time
honk6.jpgBoston, Mass.--Let's face it, we spend less and less time in public and when we do, it is often to just get from one place to another. True, every city has its fair share of festivities each year that manage to bring the populous into the streets for "celebration", but the result of these activities is little more than dollars spent, food ingested, and the possibility of being entertained.

The Honk Festival, now in its second year, is intended to be the exact opposite. The flyers describe it simply as a "Festival of Activist Street Bands," but this is no average performance. Yes, there is music, lots of music, and there's theater too, but there are no stages, no DJ's, no cart-wielding vendors, and yeah, it's free.
