Lebanon: New Short Film from Nahr al-Bared Camp
coffee.pngIn May 2007, the battle between Fatah al-Islam and the Lebanese army broke out in Nahr al-Bared Refugee Camp in northern Lebanon. Amidst heavy fighting, the Lebanese army had systematically destroyed the entire camp by September 2007. Two years later, nearly all the rubble has been cleared from the "old camp", the core of Nahr al-Bared. However, though the displaced residents grow increasingly desperate, reconstruction has yet to begin.

Remembering the Stonewall Rebellion in this week's Socialist WebZine
remember stonewall.pngThe Stonewall Inn, a gay and lesbian neighborhood bar with a large number of African American and Latino patrons, was also well-known as a safe space for those who did not conform to gender norms: butch lesbians, effeminate gay men, and transsexual and transgendered persons before the terms were in popular use. All of these factors brought the police to Stonewall in 1969 for the purpose of illegally raiding the bar, and arresting its occupants -- an action not unknown in New York in the 1960s....

Massachusetts Activists Call On Leonard Cohen to Join the Cultural Boycott of Israel
Boston - Leonard Cohen Boycott Israel 1.jpgActivists from throughout Massachusetts gathered in front of the Wang Theater in Boston on Friday and Saturday May 29th and 30th to demand that Leonard Cohen uphold the cultural boycott of Israel. Demonstrating before Cohen’s concerts at the Boston theater, protesters demanded that Cohen cancel his September tour stop in Tel Aviv, holding signs that said “Leonard Cohen: Don’t Play Israel” and leafleting concertgoers about the call for cultural boycott of Israel.

Manipulation - How Markets Really Work
030707_fear_greed.PNGWall Street's mantra is that markets move randomly and reflect the collective wisdom of investors. The truth is quite opposite. The government's visible hand and insiders control markets and manipulate them up or down for profit - all of them, including stocks, bonds, commodities and currencies.

It's financial fraud or what former high-level Wall Street insider and former Assistant HUD Secretary Catherine Austin Fitts calls "pump and dump," defined as "artificially inflating the price of a stock or other security through promotion, in order to sell at the inflated price," then profit more on the downside by short-selling. "This practice is illegal under securities law, yet it is particularly common," and in today's volatile markets likely ongoing daily.

Shepard Fairey's Obama: The Politics of Rebranding the Corporate State, and the Status of the Empire
I recently came across Chris Hedges' article entitled 'Buying Brand Obama'. Hedges describes the current nature of the Obama administration, that there is a disconnect between reality and the illusion of Obama, that there is a chasm so deep it prevents people from thinking clearly about the nature of what we face in the world:

[Chris Burnett is host of "Indymedia On Air" on KPFK 90.7 FM, Los Angeles, CA. His article was first posted on LA IMC, Tuesday, May. 26, 2009. http://la.indymedia.org/news/2009/05/227407.php ]

Boston Anti-War Memorial Day Event
New_vets for peace mem day 5-25-09 003.jpgBoston, Mass. May 25, 2009--Boston Veterans For Peace and Military Families Speakout held their second annual anti-war Memorial Day observance in Waterfront Park on May 25, 2009. Speakers spoke about the devastation of the Iraq/Afghan wars and the terrible toll taken on US soldiers as well as civilians. After the speakers, the names of each Mass. soldier killed in Iraq/Afghanistan were read aloud and a flower was tossed in the harbor water after each name was read. Bouquets of flowers were tossed in the water for the million civilian deaths in the two wars. This anti-war Memorial Day event stood in stark contrast to the many pro-war Memorial Day events held today.

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine
nakba.pngThe Russell Tribunal on Palestine will "address the failure of application of law even though it has been so clearly identified." It begins where the ICJ "stopped: highlighting the responsibilities arising from the enunciation of law, including those of the international community, which cannot continue to shirk its obligations."
