Local leaders hold a dialogue with elected officials on Welcoming MA initiative to reaffirm respect for immigrants
IMG_1675.jpgSomerville, MA. Community Organizations, local businesses and communities of faith held a dialogue with elected officials in Somerville as part of a week of action to promote the Welcoming MA campaign. This campaign is a statewide initiative to affirm Massachusetts as a Commonwealth that welcomes and respects the dignity of all people. There will be more than thirty actions and events happening all over the state in support of the Welcoming, MA Campaign. "This Campaign is really about saying we want to have a civil dialogue about issues that relate to our immigrant friends and neighbors, and not resort to name-calling and stereotyping," said Danny LeBlanc, CEO of the Somerville Community Corporation. "I believe that those of us born in the U.S. have at least that minimum obligation with respect to how we treat newcomers to our country," stated LeBlanc.

Novartis Knock Down Day
36.jpgNovartis Knock Down Day is a call for actions against Novartis on Monday, October 27th for being one of Huntingdon Life Sciences’ (HLS’s) largest customers. Without customers of Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) there simply would be no Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). The customers pay Huntingdon to test products and carry out research. If Huntingdon lost all their customers then they would have no income and be forced to close. There are only ten companies which give Huntingdon Life Sciences 45% of their income; these include Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Monday, October 27th is Novartis’ day.

Last Day of Work at the Social Forum of the Americas
misgua_workshop.jpgGuatemala, October 11.- The Social Forum of the Americas is coming to an end. Today was the last day of workshops and events at the Universidad de San Carlos. The event will conclude on Sunday with a march and rally at the Plaza Central in the historical downtown area at noon. I started the day attending the "Globalization and migration: effects on indigenous peoples" organized by MIGUA, the Movement of Guatemalan Inmigrants in the U.S." Among the panelists were Elvira Arellano, Carlos Lopez from Casa del Migrante, Eliza Orozco, indigenous leader, and Eduardo Jimenez. They stressed the impact of migrations in the local communities and the need to correct through education a consumerist development in those receiving remittances from the U.S. For those who are left behind, believing that those who have left are successful materially, are left with a sense of worthlessness.

The Third Social Forum of the Americas Has Begun in Guatemala
fsa_opening.JPGGuatemala City -- October 7, 2008.- The Social Forum of the Americas has begun, with most of the nearly 2000 participants arriving today. The registration process begun normally while switching from an automated system to a manual one. All the packets and a beautiful bag where distributed to each registered delegate. There was not doubt here that Spanish is the official language of the forum. The other undisputed presence is that of the Mayan people. In fact, their presence has been felt not only in numbers, but also in spiritual influence. Mayan religious ceremonies have gone on at dawn and sundown.

An Anti-War Resurgence?
1_issue13-8.jpgToward the end of his 2007 essay The Shock of Victory, David Graeber points out that the US government has taken extraordinary steps to protest-proof the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among other measures, the Pentagon forbids photographers from taking pictures of soldiers’ coffins returning to the US Military tactics are designed more to avoid US casualties than to win battles. Even in the face of excruciating labor shortages, with some soldiers returning for their fourth tour of duty, there has been no discussion of reinstating the draft, because even George W. Bush realizes that such a move would touch off massive demonstrations all over the country.
