City Councilor Chuck Turner's Public Statement on His Arrest
turner.jpgBoston City Councilor Chuck Turner was arrested last Friday, November 21st, by the FBI under corruptions charges that he denies, and was later released on a $50,000 bond. Since 2000, Turner has been one of the most progressive politicians in Boston, supporting minority groups, poor families, and other anti-war, economic and social justice issues. Below you will find the full statement he released upon his arrest:

"While I intensely dislike and think that it is highly unfair to decide a person's guilt or innocence through the media, it is clear that once you become the target of a media witch hunt, you either fight back by presenting the essence of your legal defense or allow the media wolves to destroy your reputation so that the jury's decision becomes irrelevant to public perception...

AIG, Congress and the Taxpayers
Why are we continuing to let the government bail out a failing business that is misusing taxpayer money? Surely there are independently owned businesses, and even individuals, that could put that money to far better use.

What is up with AIG? The taxpayers, by way of the government and without being asked, have given AIG more than $122 Billion in funds (the amount is actually said to be more like $152 Billion) to keep the failing insurance giant afloat, and yet AIG cannot seem to tighten its belt. American Insurance Group, a company originally founded in China, has been caught spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in perks for executive, top producers and independent advisor retreats since its taxpayer bailout.

Terrorizing Dissent: RNC 2008
blankTerrorizingposter1_sm.jpgGlass Bead Collective, Twin Cities Indymedia, and other independent media activists have released a new film, 'Terrorizing Dissent', an exposé of events at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. Featuring first-person accounts and footage from more than forty cameras on the streets, 'Terrorizing Dissent' focuses on the story of dissent suppressed. People charged with "conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism" speak out against the government's campaign to manipulate media coverage and label civil disobedience and community organizing as terrorism.

There will be a screening of Terrorizing Dissent at the Lucy Parsons Center on December 5th at 7 PM. The LPC is located at 549 Columbus Ave. Boston, MA

Film from Nahr al-Bared Camp in Lebanon: Transitions
baredindy.jpgMore than a year after their homes were destroyed during the battle between the Lebanese army and the militant islamist group Fatah al-Islam, the majority of the refugees from Nahr al-Bared in North Lebanon find themselves in a difficult situation. Not able to return to their homes, stuck in pre-fabricated housing units and often unemployed, many of them feel frustrated and hopeless, only sometimes seeing a glimmer of hope.

City Life Activists Help Find Temporary Shelter for Evicted Mattapan Family
citylife.jpgBOSTON/Mattapan - Less than twelve hours after Barack Obama spoke to the nation, following his historic election as the first black president, an African American family in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston was evicted from their home.

Overcome by emotion, co-owner Frances Louis found it difficult to answer reporter’s questions. But housing and tenants rights activist James Brooks, part of a group of about 25 people protesting the eviction, said “it’s a bittersweet time, you know, because Obama’s theme was ‘yes we can, we can fight against injustice” and the banks are saying ‘no, you can’t.’”
