Gaza Under Siege
gaza.jpgAfter Hamas' January 25, 2006 electoral victory, Israel targeted Gaza oppressively. All outside aid was cut off. Sanctions and an economic embargo were imposed, and the democratically elected government was falsely called a terrorist organization and isolated. Stepped up repression followed along with repeated IDF incursions, attacks, killings, targeted assassinations, arrests, destruction of property and more in a pattern all too familiar to Palestinians for over six decades. Gazans are imprisoned in their own land and have been traumatized for months. In June 2007, things got worse after Israel placed the Territory under siege - described by some as medieval because of its extreme harshness.

Counter Military Recruitment Action in Boston
New_Boston Counter- military recruitment action Aug. 2 2008 024.jpgAbout 200 anti-war activists picketed in front of the Boston armed forces recruitment center on Tremont Street. Protesters had a picket line directly in front of the center on the sidewalk. Across the street info tables were set up from Troops Out Now, Veterans For Peace, IrawqVeterans Against the War, and other peace groups. There was a small pro-war counter demonstration there with no incidents.

The picketers shouted spirited chants against the wars and the recruiting center. This action was part of a series of local actions across the country to stop a war against Iran. For more photos go to:

Political Violence Increases in El Salvador
es.jpgAs student groups prepare to commemorate the anniversary of an infamous massacre of students by government forces on July 30, 1975, political violence continues in El Salvador 33 years later. In the last two years, social organizations, human rights monitors, community groups and the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) political party have publically denounced the alarming increase in politically-motivated assassinations of their members and leadership.

Telecom workers rally for good jobs and reliable services at Verizon
IMG_2885.jpgSeeking a fair contract, more than a thousand telephone workers from throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island marched on Verizon's New England headquarters to rally for good jobs and reliable services. The current agreement covering about 65,000 employees with Verizon East expires at midnight on August 2, 2008.

[UPDATE: The Communications Workers of America announced tonight that in light of progress that has been made in bargaining for a new contract with Verizon, it has agreed to "stop the clock" on the expiration of the current contract and postpone strike action while negotiations continue. The current contract will remain in effect.]

Eviction Blockades Defend Working Neighborhoods, Stop Foreclosures
blockade.jpgAmidst the soaring cost of living and a national foreclosure crisis across the country, some residents in Boston are sticking up for their right to housing and to keep properties out of the banks’ hands. On Tuesday July 15, supporters for Roxbury resident Paula Taylor came together to stop the bank from evicting her and repossessing her house, in a technique called an “eviction blockade.” The action was successful and Taylor retained the right to live in her house.

Ice Strikes Providence: People Fight Back
ice.jpgOn July 15th, 2008 over 150 community members rallied at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in downtown Providence where many immigrants were held after a raid that same day. The 30-plus detained janitorial workers were employed at six courthouses across Rhode Island. Many of the janitorial workers who were detained were in the midst of a labor dispute with their employers. A local militant workers association, Fuerza Laboral, had been organizing with the workers to get unpaid wages. (http://www.fuerza-laboral.org/)
