Scott Ritter Sounds the Alarm on Iran
iran_oil.jpgOutspoken former UN weapons inspector in Iraq Scott Ritter visited Boston in February for a presentation and discussion on the Bush administration's secret plans for the "War on Terror," including a possible nuclear attack on Iran. Ritter, who visited Iran on a fact-finding mission, commented, "We are seeing history repeat itself," referring to the disaster in Iraq which he also warned about. Strategies for the peace movement and ordinary Americans to end the war on Iraq and to stop this dangerous move towards expansion of the Iraq war to the whole Middle East were also discussed.

What’s Wrong with the 2010 Olympics?
resist 2010-web_0.preview.jpgThe Secwepemc have never ceded their lands to Canada or to anyone else. They have consistently affirmed their right to live as they always have, by hunting and fishing to sustain their communities. Development has slowly been eroding this way of life. Despite their recognized right to their ancestral lands, Canadian courts have sided with the province and developers in destroying their habitat as well as the habitats of many wild animals. The concerns of the First Nation peoples are not new. Naomi Klein wrote a 2003 piece for the Guardwarian entitled, “The Olympics Land Grab,” in which she described the repressive measures used by the Canadian government to enforce its presumed right to overrun native lands.

Organizing Lessons from Civil Rights Leader Ella Baker
ella baker.jpgElla Baker, who was born in North Carolina in 1905, was politicized and radicalized by the poverty of the Great Depression. She participated in self-help programs throughout the 30s and developed an understanding and respect for the process by which people take control over their own lives while also protesting injustices.

[This is an excerpt from an essay written by Chris Crass on organizing lessons to be learned from the life long revolutionary organizing work of Ella Baker.]

Support illegally fired IWW worker!
01_picket_line.jpgThree weeks ago, eight community members went to the Harvest's board of directors to express concern over the termination of Deon Furtick. Two supporters of Deon, a co-worker and long time co-op member, spoke on his behalf during a five minute public comment period. The group asked the board of directors for Deon to be reinstated with back pay, that management use progressive discipline before firing employees, and that the right to organize be respected. Since then community members have passed out hundreds of flyers outside the co-op's two locations in Cambridge and Jamaica Plain, and dozens of phone calls have been made to management on Deon's behalf. Yet so far the Harvest has refused to discuss the issue.

El Salvador: All Charges Dropped in Case Against “Suchitoto 13”
lucharejas.gifOn Tuesday, February 19, 13 political activists arrested last July in the town of Suchitoto were set free, and all charges against them were dismissed. This victory for the “Suchitoto 13” comes on the heels of the initial charges of “acts of terrorism” being dropped on February 8, following a drawn out, 7-month investigation. The terrorism charges, enabled by El Salvador ’s 2006 Special Law Against Acts of Terrorism, were universally denounced by human rights organizations in El Salvador and around the world, and carried a potential sentence of up to 60 years in prison.

The 11th Annual Homeless Radio Marathon
PROTV_voices_of_the_homeless.jpgThe 11th Annual Homelessness Marathon, a 14-hour national radio dialogue on poverty and housing in the US, will take place Wednesday night to Thursday morning, February 20-21. Originating this year in Nashville, the Marathon is a live, outdoor, broadcasting event featuring homeless people, advocates for the homeless and call-ins from the public. A broadcast booth is set up outside, with open mics for people who are out on the street in Nashville that night. The Marathon does not raise money for charity. Its mission is to raise consciousness, by covering a broad range of topics, speaking with experts, taking calls from around the country, and above all, by putting homeless people on the air directly.

End UMass Amherst Primate Testing
jaaws6-1.jpgProfessor Melinda Novak (UMass Amherst Psychology Department Chair) is currently well into a 14-year research project investigating Self-Injurious Behavior (SIB) in primates. To do so, she is exposing primates to stressful environments which result in primates committing acts of self mutilation though biting and other such activity.

The OTHER Presidential Primary
Democracy1.JPGAs we Massachusetts voters look out on the political horizon, we witness an incredible dumbing down of our democracy. Instead of seeing potential leaders who speak clearly to the real issues that face us, we see games of showmanship, charm and style, and a burying of issues beneath mountains of fluff. Instead of hearing about real solutions to the economic nightmare facing most of us, we get more of the same absurd policies – like one-off tax cuts and magical stimulus packages that will somehow erase our housing, credit card, student loan and medical debts, not to mention crushing federal, state, and local government debts. Instead of hearing about the mounting ecological crises facing our communities, our nation, and the world, and the deep societal changes required to stave them off, and the small time window for action, we hear about technological fixes and consumerist advances that remove the responsibility off of our individual and collective shoulders.
