Protestors Gather to Declare: Protest Is Not TERRORISM!
romero.jpgOn Saturday afternoon, October 6, 2007, under a brilliant sky, fifty activists converged on the plaza in Maverick Square in East Boston, Massachusetts to sound the alarm about events in El Salvador. Led by CISPES and joined by the Cambridge-El Salvador Sister City Project and Centro Presente, the rally was called to bring attention to the arrests of 13 people in Suchitoto for simply speaking out against the government’s water privatization policy. Speakers throughout the afternoon outlined the new anti-terror law under which the thirteen were charged with acts of terror and face up to 50 years in jail for being at or near a lawful protest.

NIH Report on BU Bioterror Lab Biased, Independent Study Needed
Bioterrorism.jpgRisk assessments of the construction site for Boston University’s biodefense laboratory are subject to partisan politics, arbitrary to the project’s funding and should be strictly reviewed. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), as the main funding organization, has high stakes in the success of the biolab and is now playing the largest role in determining the safety of building the lab in a high-density population area of Boston.

Reviewing Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine"
shock_doctrine.jpgNaomi Klein is an award-winning Canadian journalist, author, documentary filmmaker and activist. She writes a regular column for The Nation magazine and London Guardian that's syndicated internationally by the New York Times Syndicate that gives people worldwide access to her work but not its own readers at home.

In 2004, she and her husband and co-producer Avi Lewis released their first feature documentary - "The Take." It covered the explosion of activism in the wake of Argentina's 2001 economic crisis. People responded with neighborhood assemblies, barter clubs, mass movements of the unemployed and workers taking over bankrupt companies and reopening them under their own management.

Raids by ICE: A Psychological War that Terrifies Our Communities
480625447_3e17200feb.jpgLast Tuesday, August 28, to people who live in the area of East Boston and Chelsea in Massachusetts it looked like the city was under siege. Detachments from the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and other police forces roamed the streets creating panic among immigrant workers and their families. A community organizer spotted the ICE agents at the Maverick T station and pointed his camera in their direction. He was immediately surrounded, his camera confiscated, he was interrogated, and he was ordered to show his documents. Eventually they let him go. A Spanish-radio reporter who knew the organizer stopped to inquire what was happening. ICE agents told him to move on and out of there. But, the alarm was set off and 1600 AM radio waves were soon filled with phone calls about additional ICE police activity around town. This went on from around 6 am until noon.

Celeste and Dante Zappala produced a home made video and posted it online to counter-act a national campaign launched by Ari Fleischer, former press secretary to President George W. Bush, and its advocacy group Freedom's Watch, to pressure Congress to continue funding the war.
