Justice for Boston Children's Museum Workers!
workers.gifThe Boston Children's Museum (BCM) is widely known for its commitment to the children of Boston. But this Christmas, the president of the museum, Lou Casagrande is acting like a big Grinch to workers at the museum.

More than 15 BCM employees (mostly part-time, low-wage workers)were told on December 2 that their jobs would be terminated shortly after the holiday when the museum closes for renovations. Further, despite their experience at the museum, they were told they would not be guaranteed employment when the museum reopens.

Protesters Object to Reverend John Dooher's Elevation
Just like they have done Sunday after Sunday, right after mass, for the past 4 years, the “sidewalk protesters” gathered once again in front of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston’s South End.

Except it is 1:30 on a Tuesday afternoon and today’s mass is not your usual Sunday one: Reverend John Dooher – a high-ranking chancery officer who coordinated sexual misconduct matters, alongside Bishop John McCormack- is being elevated to Auxiliary Bishop overseeing the Boston Archdiocese’s South Region. It is believed that as a coordinator, John Dooher helped create housing for abusive priests and by remaining silent about the issue, participated in covering-up the sexual abuse.

March-on-Washington--December-4--2006-277.jpgOn Monday, December 4, 53 people from Cambridge and Boston attended a national demonstration at the Supreme Court sponsored by BAMN (By Any Means Necessary) in order to defend equal schooling for all children. The trip, sponsored by the Student Coalition for Justice at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), was initiated by students in Gary Orfield’s “Desegregation and the Possibility of Integration” class.

Jewish Voice for Peace Joins 90 Other Cities to Demand Human Rights for Palestine
DSC00805.jpgIsrael has been controlling the entrances and exits to Gaza for the past months, preventing the population from receiving the humanitarian aid they so desperately need and creating a disastrous human crisis.

On Saturday, December 2nd, the International Day of Action to Stop the Siege of Gaza, Jewish Voice for Peace/Boston held a demonstration in Harvard Square, one of many JVP-initiated demonstrations in the U.S. in which members and supporters stood in solidarity with peace and justice groups in Israel, Palestine, and in more than 90 cities around the world who want to see this terrible disaster end and to ask for what should be a given: the respect of every human’s rights.

Congressman McGovern Commits to Work with Activists to Repeal AETA
2451.jpgOn November 29th protesters rallied outside of Representative James McGovern’s in protest of The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), which was signed into law on November 27th. Under the new law, animal rights activists face massive fines and jail time for being involved in nonviolent civil disobedience. In light of increased marginalization and repression of eco-activists by federal officials, all individuals concerned with loss of our civil liberties to need to ban together in protest of the AETA and act in solidarity with victims of the Greenscare.

Boston Rallies for Rosa Parks Human Rights Day
rosa.jpgA coalition of groups working for social and economic justice came together in Roxbury yesterday to celebrate Rosa Parks Human Rights Day. Although the event failed to attract the many hundreds of participants present at last year’s rally and march, the resilient spirit of those present did not fail to garner support from bystanders in our city’s streets.

The first day of December marked the 51st anniversary of the arrest of Rosa Parks after refusing to give her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, which amounted to a direct defiance to segregation laws in the south and created a national movement to counter such racist policies.

Testimony of a Detained Oaxaqueño
294599271_8192df9e41.jpgTestimony of a detained Oaxaqueño
November 9th, 2006
Planton de Santo Domingo, Ciudad de Oaxaca

Can you tell me about your detention?

On November 2nd, the PFP (Federal Police) carried out an operative to do away with the barricade Cinco Señores, protecting the University. That day, I was running an errand for my father. The disturbances were visible from afar. When I finished the errand, I came closer to the barricade to see what was happening. Suddenly, then, the PFP came and, without a word, without an arrest warrant, and without witnesses, they detained me very violently.

[BIMC Editors Note: In spite of the music and interference that could be tuned until 6:00 pm on 1400 AM, Radio Universidad was handed over from 4:00 pm on to the vice-president of Universidad Autonoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca, after negotiations. Until 6:45 pm, there were no news about detentions except that it was reported that the radio security and the “people who had occupied the radio in behalf of APPO” were under custody of the president of the UABJO--Chiapas Indymedia. A megamarcha has been called for Dec. 1st]

Boston and the World Unites to Support Oaxaca
DSC01083.jpgMost of those in America who have heard of Oaxaca, Mexico know it as a vacation spot: The fifth largest State of the country – and also the poorest one- attracts many tourists with its white beaches and food. Visitors might be curious about it’s large indigenous population, but will probably be distracted by their hunt for a black pottery plate or a carved wooden figurine to bring back as a souvenir. But do a Google search and a different kind of Oaxaca will appear, surrounded by words like: teachers strike, repression, resistance, violence, killings...yet, nothing is reported about it on national televisions.

The silence surrounding the situation in Oaxaca is what the worldwide protest held on Monday November 20 was about. In Boston -as well as in seventeen US cities- people started to gather outside the Park Street T-stop at 7 am to support those who have been fighting the government for the past 6 months. Braving the cold, they handed out flyers to commuters on their way to work, educating them about the issue.
