Community members support Medicare for all as numbers of uninsured rise
quote.jpgBOSTON – New census data released Tuesday is galvanizing support for a public forum on Sept. 1 where several Members of Congress will hear from a diverse group of seniors, workers, caregivers, immigrants, women, people of color, the uninsured, and local elected officials in support of a "Medicare for All" solution to the health care crisis.

The growing severity of the health care crisis has brought together over 40 grassroots organizations in Massachusetts for an impressive -- and unusual -- showing of political unity.

Willy Wonka and the Racism Factory
wonka.jpgThe most recent film adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is shaping up to be one of the highest grossing summer blockbusters of 2005. This is the third re-incarnation of Roald Dahl's controversial story over the past four decades. As such, it is instructive, to examine it's transformation in relation to issues of racism and colonialism.

Bikes not Bombs looking for a new home
BNB.jpgJAMAICA PLAIN.—Keeping the enormous steel thicket of bicycles, at 59 Amory St. organized and manageable is a tall enough task for Bikes Not Bombs' (BNB) industrious volunteers, yet founder Carl Kurz and his bike mechanic cadres now face an even bigger challenge. Moving.

The organization has been a tenant-at-will for over two years. Only a few other possibilities for a home have presented themselves since then, none were perfectly matched. Without a lease, members of the group worry that the building may be sold or the owners may decide to renovate.

“We’re part of the fabric of JP that people love,” said Kurz, “if we move too far out we won’t be able to attract the same numbers of people and the same support, so it’s a tough problem.”

Green building gets green light in Jackson Square
usgbclogo300.jpgJamaica Plain’s non-profit neighborhood development corporations are slowly turning green, and the Jackson Square development may become their most environmentally sustainable project yet.

Partners for Jackson (PfJ), a partnership among Urban Edge, Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) and the Hyde Square Task Force, recently received a grant for $100,000 from the Green Building Production Network (GBPN) to study the feasibility of various green features for the development as well as an $100,000 interest-free loan to offset the up-front costs of the design process. PfJ was among four projects selected out of 10 applicants in the Greater Boston Area.

Somerville Theater pulls contract on the Reagan Babies' Jesus Christ Terrorist
collagerb22portfolio.jpgThe Somerville Theatre has just informed us-- the Reagan Babies, a local band/performance group (www.reaganbabies.com)-- that our scheduled October 29th event, the final performance of "Jesus Christ Terrorist," a rock opera, has been cancelled despite a contract that was signed over three months ago and thousands of pre-production dollars spent. Theatre representative, Sherri Belski, claims that her decision to pull the contract was a result of the theater's insurance carrier refusing to cover the event. However, upon further discussion with Ms. Belski it has become clear that there was more to it and that, in fact, it is likely that the political content of the performance is at question.

Youth and allies defy mall owners assault on freedom of assembly
The war on youth by the bosses and their agents in the United States is waged through many forms of state repression including police occupation of their communities and the super-exploitation of their labor power.

Another form of repression that’s increasing, especially at a time of increased youth rebellion to Pentagon recruitment and other attacks-is the abolition of, or restricting of access to, public or defacto public spaces.

blockade.jpgFor the last few months a national mobilization called Mountain Justice Summer has been underway in Southern Appalachia to raise awareness about the devestating effects mountain top removal mining and put an end to this devestating practice.
