Indymedia T-Shirt Design Contest!
Tshirtcontest4web.jpgBoston’s Independent Media Center is contemplating conquering the fashion world with our very own line of upper-torso wear. Being an open source media center, we felt that the best thing to do is give everyone a chance to come up with the winning design(s). After all, we are you, you are us and so on… The winner(s) will receive a year long subscription to the bi-weekly Boston Independent newspaper (that will debut in the next month or so) and two free T-shirts with their own winning design printed on them! Not to mention the satisfaction of promoting the future of Boston’s very own independent media source, working hard to bring you the truth and give you the tools to tell it.

Worcester Students Protest "Spirit of America" Tour
a_soa_8_flag_line-up.jpgI arrived at the Worcester Centrum with a contingent of Clark students around 930 that morning, and the peace presence was already quite conspicuous, “who would Jesus bomb”, etc. A Marines jeep sat on the sidewalk, with a phone number stenciled on the side for those hoping to “secure [their] futures” in the military. Recruiters in full attire greeted the students in the lobby of the Centrum, passing out pamphlets on all the so-called benefits that accompany military service, and imploring them to sign up.

Lacking a live-action laser show extravaganza of our own, we assembled peacefully on the sidewalk, armed with pamphlets about the risks of military service and instructions on preventing your personal information from being disclosed to military recruiters. This, it seems, was not entirely cool.

Recruiters Invade Worcester, Activists Plan Resistance
indy2.jpgMA Call Out - Against the Kick-Off of a Major Military Recruitment Drive in Worcester Sept. 10th and 11th

Massachusetts based peace and global justice groups are calling for a convergence of voices and groups opposed to the U.S. military’s use of Sept. 11th for the purpose of recruiting another generation of young people.

The U.S. Army has announced a North East Regional presentation of “Spirit of America” a 2-hour multi-media extravaganza. Over 400 active duty military personnel, military vehicles, video, audio and electronic special effects, recreate bloodless battle scenes as part of a storyline portraying a young man who “decides to follow his grandfather in the path of military service”.

Come build a community radio station in Portsmouth!
During the weekend of September 10th-12th, hundreds of community radio organizers from New England, and all over the world, will gather together to bring a brand new community radio station to the air, as the Prometheus Radio Project partners with Portsmouth Community Radio for its sixth Radio Barnraising!

As volunteer technicians build everything from the studio to the tower, producers, engineers, and organizers from all over the United States and Canada will teach dozens of workshops on everything from how to record and edit a news show, to how to navigate the intricacies of FCC regulations. Earlier radio barnraisings have been with civil rights groups, farmworkers organizations, environmental groups, Native American tribes, and community groups.

The Long Arm of the UfPJ? (and RNC Photos)
DSCN3001.jpgNEW YORK CITY- A half a million people marched by the Fortified and Republo-filled Madison Square Gardens today, and many felt the conspicuous absence of a rallying point. Tolu Olupna, a NYC resident, felt that the march was “disorganized,” because of the lack of a rally space. “I would love to be listening to speeches right now,” Olupna said as she sat in the shade at Union Square with other marchers uncertain about just where to go.
But requests for a permit to rally on the Great Lawn were finally denied by the New York State Supreme Court. UfPJ officially asked people not to march to Central Park. After a long and inspiring march, a focusing point is a positive thing, it is a place to get out the message, a place to talk and connect with people. UfPJ didn’t win a permit, but does that mean that they should also act to discourage people from assembling anyway?

Grand Opening! Workers Fight to Unionize Sexuality Boutique
labor! sex! feminism! solidarity!

Organized labor has never been sexier! Grand Opening!, Boston's premier sexuality boutique, has once again revolutionized what it means to sell sex toys. GO! workers have voted to join with UNITE HERE! and form the Grand Opening! Workers' Union. They have taken this step due to the high turnover rate of good employees, the lack of adequate benefits, the lack of a consistently fair living wage, the desire for a meaningful voice in the workplace, and the lack of a formal grievance process, among other issues.

DNC 2 RNC March Arrives in Manhattan!
capt.nyff10508270.jpgThe connection between the oppressive Democrats and the oppressive Republicans has finally been made! Over 500 people marched down the last bit of New York's Broadway and entered Union Square park triumphant, having marched 258 miles in 28 days spreading the message that the two party system does not and could not possibly represent the vast diversity that now resides in the United States.

MBTA Bag Search Policy Still in Effect
tprot.jpgAccording to the Press Secretary for the MBTA, Joe Tesaturo, The Globe article “MBTA HALTS BAGGAGE SCREENING” is in fact not entirely truthful. The MBTA has not officially ended the bag search policy, and although the MBTA will not say when, where, or if bag searches will continue, they may begin again at any time. “Our security screening policy remains in place,” said Mr. Tesaturo, “If you look carefully at the globe article, nowhere in it does it say that the MBTA has officially ended the policy.”
