SEPTEMBER 11TH ANNIVERSARY: Peace Vigil in Remembrance of the Victims of 9-11 and the US War on Terror
vigilersOn the eve of the second anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, about 250 of us gathered on the Boston Common around the bandstand for a vigil in remembrance of all those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of that day and the ensuing US wars on Afghanistan and Iraq. Organized mainly by a coalition of local churches, synagogues and mosques, the speakers shared their grief for the dead, their rejection of the hatred driving the attacks on Arab and Muslim immigrants at home and the US’s war-making abroad, and their hope for a better future, free of bigotry and war.

THE PRISON-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX: Woman Dies From Medical Neglect at Framingham Prison
Kelly Jo Griffen, 24, of Lynn, MA arrived at MCI-Framingham, the Massachusetts Women’s Prison, sometime after 5:00PM on Monday July 21. Less than 36 hours later she was pronounced dead. Activists have many questions about why a young woman who was picked up on an outstanding default which may have expired, and whose bail was only $100 which her family was willing to pay, was transported to MCI-Framingham at all. MCI-Framingham did not act on repeated telephone calls from Kelly’s relatives, in which her family begged that Kelly get hospital treatment as she was very ill with a kidney disease and "detoxing by default" from a heavy addiction

THE ENVIRONMENT: Tree-Sit to Save Forests on Mt. Wachusett from Ski Area Expansion
tree sitMass Earth First!s tree-sit in the proposed Mt. Wachusett ski area expansion in central Massachusetts has reached the one week mark today. Two intrepid sitters remain from 80 to 100 feet up on platforms in the mature red oaks that help buffer the state's largest stand of old-growth forest from prevailing winds. Wachusett Mountain Associates (WMA), the front group for the wealthy and politically well-connected Crowley family plans to clear-cut the old-growth buffer zone for yet another expansion of their bogus ski operation located on public land.

THE ENVIRONMENT: Lawrence Greens Reverse Water Privatization
In what can only be described as a huge victory for the community of Lawrence, it was just announced that the mayor and the City Council has decided to listen to the will of the community and terminate any attempts to privatize the water delivery system. This means that Lawrence’s water system will remain publicly controlled and operated. This was a huge affirmation for those of us (Lawrence Greens, local anarchists, and lots of community members) who worked over the last eight months to stop the corporate giveaway that two mayoral administrations (with an open checkbook provided by the City Council) had pushed for. We knew that many of us believe that “water is a basic human need, and therefore a right, and should not be treated as a commodity". But we didn’t know if the community and the city council would agree with us.

IMMIGRANTS RIGHTS: Rally for Immigrants Rights in Harvard Square
rally in BrattleOn Saturday, August 2 about 150 of us gathered in front of the Au Bon Pain cafe in Harvard Square to protest against the racist attacks on immigrants and Muslims by both the US government and individuals, including government round-ups of people based on their ethnicity; other forms of racial, ethnic and religious profiling; violations of the civil rights of immigrants from Middle Eastern, South Asian and Muslim countries; and bigoted attacks, including arson and lynching, against Middle Easterners, South Asians, and Muslims. Speakers at the rally called the immigrant rights movement a struggle for democracy of the same sort as the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Organizers are dealing with the crisis by organizing on multiple levels and building coalitions across communities.

PRISON REFORM/ABOLITION: State Government Ignores Humane, Cost-Saving Alternatives to Prison
At the same time as it sacrifices essential services to taxpayers on the altar of “budget cuts,” the Massachusetts state government is ignoring a potentially far-reaching strategy for trimming costs, and, many observers say, worsening already-existing problems in the Department of Corrections for a waste totaling tens of millions of dollars annually. The state government is continuing to build new prisons, instead of investing in cheaper and more effective alternatives such as treatment for addiction, probation, and community service.

LABOR: Victory for Striking Projectionists at Somerville Theater
After having been locked-out for over ten weeks, projectionists at the Somerville Theatre have emerged victorious in their struggle for union recognition. The management has agreed to voluntarily recognize the union, sign a fair contract, and pay full back wages to all locked-out employees. Although this was a modest struggle in and of itself, we see it as a significant victory for young, exploited and pissed off workers everywhere.
