LABOR: UMass Amherst Unions Confront Trustees, Plan Walkouts
Protest Against TrusteesOn Nov. 6 over 200 rank-and-file workers from five University of Massachusetts unions confronted the system's Board of Trustees demanding the funding of their contracts. In a spirited face off students of color also demanded the restoration of advising and other services gutted in June.

STATE REPRESSION: Boston Palestinian Activists Face More Harassment
At around 8 AM on Monday, November 4, one of the foremost activists in the Boston Palestinian community, Amer Jubran, was taken into custody at his Cumberland, Rhode Island home. He is being held at an INS holding facility in Cranston, Rhode Island, while the INS investigates what they call 'violations of INS statutes'. Meanwhile, his friend and fellow Palestinian activist, Jaoudat Abouazza, has faced continued interrogations by the FBI in Montreal.

IRAQ: 13,000+ New Englanders Rally in Boston for Peace
Crowd at RallyOn Sunday 11/03/02, over 13,000 people from across New England gathered on the Boston Common for a peace rally and march through Boston. A great diversity of signs, some of them highly creative, voiced people’s opposition to a war on Iraq. Some carried signs calling for working through the UN for weapons inspections and against a first strike, while others were simply opposed to all war.

JUSTICE FOR JANITORS: Boston Janitors Win!
photoBoston-area janitors and cleaning contractors reached a tentative contract settlement Wednesday that will dramatically improve janitorial jobs. The agreement with the Maintenance Contractors of New England uses the framework of the Interim agreement that had already been reached with 9 contractors and achieves all of janitors' goals, including extending employer-paid health insurance to more janitors, boosting pay significantly, and improving benefits such as sick leave.

JUSTICE FOR JANITORS: 800 Rally and March For Janitors
Billy BraggAs the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 615 janitors' strike finished its third week, about eight hundred janitors, students, and community members rallied in Copley Square, followed by a spirited march through the Prudential Center and back to Copley Square. The janitors' strike targets major downtown Boston buildings serviced by contract cleaning agencies, especially UNICCO. The union's main demands include more full-time jobs, health insurance for more janitors, and better wages.

IRAQ: Former UN Weapons Inspector Speaks Out Against War with Iraq at Deerfield
Scott Ritter, the former head of the UN weapons inspections team in Iraq, spoke at Deerfield Academy to a packed auditorium Tuesday night October 15th. According to Ritter, the Bush administration has not shown us any evidence of weapons of destruction because there isn't any. 95% of the weapons Mr. Ritter's inspection team was sent to find were located and destroyed. Ritter urged people to get involved with the democratic process and speak out against the war.

JUSTICE FOR JANITORS: Second Week of Janitors' Strike Sees More Civil Disobedience
Fourteen community members, including Cambridge State Representative Jarrett Barrios, were arrested in an act of civil disobedience to support the janitors of SEIU local 615 as they entered the second week of their strike. The act was part of a full day of rallies and pickets to support the striking janitors. The janitors' strike targets major downtown Boston buildings serviced by contract cleaning agencies, especially UNICCO. The union's main demands revolve around better healthcare coverage, more full-time employment, and higher wages.
