JUSTICE FOR JANITORS: Boston Janitors Launch Massive Strike
The Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) local 615 lauched one of the largest labor actions in recent Boston history on Monday, September 30. Twelve hundred janitors from about fifteen buildings did not attend work that evening, going on strike instead. The following night, more janitors struck and the union plans to continue escalating until up to 11,000 janitors are on strike throughout Greater Boston.

LABOR: "Shop-In" for Shaw's Workers--and Janitors
Check OutOn September 28, twenty shoppers participated in a "shop-in" at the Shaw's/Star Market near MIT. The shoppers wore bright yellow T-shirts reading "We support Shaw's/Star Workers Right To Organize". The UFCW is in the middle of a one-year-old campaign to organize 5,500 workers at 44 Shaw's and Star Markets (both owned by Sainsbury) throughout the state. Star Market refuses to hire workers full-time, making them ineligible for benefits, even though they work thirty to thirty-five hours per week. The company has also held intimidating meetings at which they tell workers that joining a union is a bad idea.

GLOBAL AND LOCAL JUSTICE: Janitors and Global Justice Activists Take Action Against Unicco and Fleet Bank
Justice for Janitors RallyOn September 26, 200 labor and global justice activists rallied in Copley Sqaure in support of the upcoming janitors' strike against Unicco for higher wages and healthcare. Seven were arrested for commiting civil disobedience by blocking the street. A smaller group continued on afterward in a protest in solidarity with the anti-IMF/World Bank protests in Washington DC this weekend. The local target was Fleet Bank, because of their role in destroying Argentina's economy in collusion with the IMF and World Bank.

ELECTORAL POLITICS: Democracy in the Parking Lot: Protest Against Exclusion of Green Candidate for Governor from Debates
More than 50 supporters of Massachusetts Green Party gubernatorial candidate Dr. Jill Stein gathered outside the debate hall on Tuesday to protest the exclusion of Stein from the first post-primary gubernatorial debate. The debate was held at Western New England College in Springfield. The only candidates permitted to participate were Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Shannon OBrien.

PALESTINE: Protesters Rally Against Speech by Harvard President Equating Criticism of Israel with Anti-Semitism
Roughly fifty people gathered at 5:30 PM in front of Au Bon Pain in Harvard Square in Cambridge to protest a recent speech by Harvard Univesity President Larry Summers in which Summers criticized protestors of Israel as being "anti-Semitic in their effect, if not their intent."

LABOR: Nine Arrested at Prudential Center in Protest in Support of Janitors
Nine people--seven students, one Emerson professor, and a community supporter--were arrested while protesting for health benefits for janitors. The protest, in Boston Properties' Prudential Center, was directed against Boston Properties, which is the only major building owner that has not yet declared its support for Boston janitors in their negotiations with cleaning contractors for health benefits, full time work, and wage improvements.

HEALTHCARE: State Audit Catches 62 Nursing Homes Stealing Public Money Meant for Workers
A state audit of 90 nursing homes found that 62 facilities failed to give certified nursing assistants (CNAs) wage increases funded by the Commonwealth. The 62 facilities will be required to return the monies allocated for the direct care givers along with a 50 percent penalty.
