ELECTORAL POLITICS: Democracy in the Parking Lot: Protest Against Exclusion of Green Candidate for Governor from Debates
More than 50 supporters of Massachusetts Green Party gubernatorial candidate Dr. Jill Stein gathered outside the debate hall on Tuesday to protest the exclusion of Stein from the first post-primary gubernatorial debate. The debate was held at Western New England College in Springfield. The only candidates permitted to participate were Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Shannon O’Brien.

PALESTINE: Protesters Rally Against Speech by Harvard President Equating Criticism of Israel with Anti-Semitism
Roughly fifty people gathered at 5:30 PM in front of Au Bon Pain in Harvard Square in Cambridge to protest a recent speech by Harvard Univesity President Larry Summers in which Summers criticized protestors of Israel as being "anti-Semitic in their effect, if not their intent."

LABOR: Nine Arrested at Prudential Center in Protest in Support of Janitors
Nine people--seven students, one Emerson professor, and a community supporter--were arrested while protesting for health benefits for janitors. The protest, in Boston Properties' Prudential Center, was directed against Boston Properties, which is the only major building owner that has not yet declared its support for Boston janitors in their negotiations with cleaning contractors for health benefits, full time work, and wage improvements.

HEALTHCARE: State Audit Catches 62 Nursing Homes Stealing Public Money Meant for Workers
A state audit of 90 nursing homes found that 62 facilities failed to give certified nursing assistants (CNAs) wage increases funded by the Commonwealth. The 62 facilities will be required to return the monies allocated for the direct care givers along with a 50 percent penalty.

IRAQ: Interfaith Walk for Peace with Iraq Passes Through Boston
An interfaith peace walk, seeking to prevent war with Iraq, that has been traveling across Massachusetts, passed through Boston on September 6. The group wants not only to prevent an escalation of the on-going bombing of Iraq, but to end the sanctions that have destroyed Iraq’s economy and killed hundreds of thousands of people, and to end the Bush administration’s ever expanding “war on terror”.

LABOR: Boston Janitors on the Verge of a Strike
An audio report and interviews; 5 minutes total. As part of the Justice for Janitors campaign, Boston janitors with SEIU 685 are preparing to go on on strike if the city-wide contract negotiations with cleaning contractors fail. The union is pushing for decent wages (most janitors currently earn about $39/night), affordable family healthcare (most janitors have no health care) and full-time job opportunities (75% of jobs are currently part time).

EDUCATION: Higher Education Union Members Demand that the State Government Fund Their Contracts
At campuses across the state, thousands of college faculty, education professionals and support staff left work briefly this morning for a "unity coffee break." The coordinated campus actions were designed to show Governor Swift, the Legislature and college administrators that quality higher education hinges on funding for their union contracts. The unprecedented statewide mobilization was in response to the refusal by Governor Swift and the Legislature to fund union contracts at 29 university, state and community college campuses in Massachusetts.

LABOR: NECCO Factory Machinists on Strike
NECCO factory machinists are striking for improvements in their contract, especially in health care coverage. As the current contract stands, health care fees would be ramped up to $150/week within the next two years. NECCO is scheduled to move out of Cambridge this winter, to a new, non-union location in Revere, resulting in many layoffs. Although negotiations are happening today, the machinists are not hopeful and expect the strike to continue.
