An Anti-War Resurgence? |
by Sublett, |
Toward the end of his 2007 essay The Shock of Victory, David Graeber points out that the US government has taken extraordinary steps to protest-proof the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among other measures, the Pentagon forbids photographers from taking pictures of soldiers’ coffins returning to the US Military tactics are designed more to avoid US casualties than to win battles. Even in the face of excruciating labor shortages, with some soldiers returning for their fourth tour of duty, there has been no discussion of reinstating the draft, because even George W. Bush realizes that such a move would touch off massive demonstrations all over the country.

Banks Get Bailed Out, People Get Thrown Out |
by D (NEFAC-Boston), |
The Esquivel family were evicted Thursday from their home in Roslindale. That same morning they had gone to the Boston Municipal Court in a last effort to stop the eviction. The judge did not rule in their favor. Raul and Anna Esquivel came back from court, tears streaming for their face, to find about 10 police officers on and around their property and another 40 people protesting the eviction. The picket was lively and emotional. Around forty people came out to support the Esquivels. The blockade was called by City Life/Urbana, and supported by many community groups, including Dorchester People for Peace, SEIU 615, the Boston No Eviction Network, the Boston Workers Alliance and others. At one point it appeared that the eviction was going to be called off. To this news, Anna Esquivel danced and people cheered. Yet about 30 minutes later, there was another call saying the eviction was in fact going to take place that same day at 2:30 pm. |

Bailout Bush (video) |
by Michael Borkson, |
About 25 protesters gathered at Park Street in Boston Thursday, Sept. 25 to protest Bush's bailout of Wall Street. As we look upon the demise of capitalism and its inherant greed, people all over the US Thursday held protests to say "Foreclose the CEOs-not our homes."
A lame (very lame) duck president "Bailout" Bush(aka Markus) showed up at the Boston rally to panhandle passersby for a few spare billions to rescue Wall Street(or "War" Street--they finance and profit from US wars). |

Listen to Keith Saunders, the current President of MassCann, the Massachusetts Cannibals Reform coalition, and sponsoring organization of this, the 19th annual Freedom Rally, which took place Saturday, September 20 on the Boston Common. Some people described it as a day of Utopia; beautiful weather, free eclectic music, food and culture vendors, and the ability to light up in public without paranoia. Although the Boston Globe reported 6 arrests, which is way down from years past.

PHILIPPINES: Suspend US Military Deployments to Mindanao |
by Citizens’ Peace Watch, |
A broad coalition of NGOs, social movements, and political parties from Mindanao and the rest of the country today called for all US military deployments in Mindanao suspended pending the conclusion of a fair and thorough probe by lawmakers.
The Citizens’ Peace Watch, a group formed to monitor what it fears as the growing and permanent US military presence in the South, reiterated its recommendations from a fact-finding mission it conducted in Zamboanga City and Sulu last February. Members of the mission claim to have seen with their own eyes — and to have pictures of — the US’ military structures inside Camp Navarro in Zamboanga City. |
