Activists Open 10 Year-Old Roadblock, Again
al jaba 11_04 1.JPGIsraeli and international solidarity activists from the Palestine Solidarity Project joined Palestinians from Beit Ommar, Surif, Al-Jab’a, and Hebron as they moved the massive interlocking cement blocks and boulders, opening a space for Palestinian vehicles to pass through. PSP has organized actions at this roadblock a number of times in the past year, in defiance of the IOF’s attempts to control Palestinian freedom of movement.

Coup D'Etat Rumblings in Venezuela
constitucion-bolivariana.jpgThe Bush administration tried and failed three prior times to oust Hugo Chavez since its first aborted two-day coup attempt in April, 2002. Through FOIA requests, lawyer, activist and author Eva Golinger uncovered top secret CIA documents of US involvement that included an intricate financing scheme involving the quasi-governmental agency, National Endowment of Democracy (NED), and US Agency for International Development (USAID). The documents also showed the White House, State Department and National Security Agency had full knowledge of the scheme, had to have approved it, and there's little doubt of CIA involvement as it's always part of this kind of dirty business. What's worrying now is what went on then may be happening again in what looks like a prelude to a fourth made-in-Washington attempt to oust the Venezuelan leader that must be monitored closely as events develop.

Bolivian Anarchism and Indigenous Resistance: Interview with Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui
III_Cumbre__final_.jpgThe South American nation of Bolivia has filled the headlines of the global press with their fight against water privatization, struggle for nationalization of gas, non-compliance with free trade policies, and the election of South America’s first indigenous president, Evo Morales. These struggles are rooted in the long history of indigenous resistance to colonialism and imperialism in Bolivia. In an interview conducted during her recent stay in Pittsburgh, subaltern theorist, Aymara sociologist, and historian Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui discussed Bolivian Anarchism, the health benefits of the Coca plant, and the Cocaleros' (Coca Growers') fight for sovereignty.

Immigration Raids Create Emotional Trauma and Economic Distress for Children, New Report FInds
199190_IMG_0095.JPGBoston, MA - The Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) and the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NSWMA) presented a new report by the Urban Institute and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), which examines how recent immigration enforcement actions have affected the wellbeing of children of immigrants in the U.S.

Researchers found that for every two people detained in immigration enforcement operations, one child is left behind. Two-thirds of these children are U.S. citizens and a similar share is under age ten. The report details the consequences of immigration enforcement operations on children's psychological, educational, economic, and social wellbeing. It also outlines the heavy burden that workplace raids are placing on communities, school systems, social service providers, and religious institutions, which have acted as first responders for families in these incidents.
