BioJustice 2007 Responds to Biotechnology Industry
biojustice-beehive-LR.gifBOSTON -- A major public gathering on biotechnology is coming to Boston in early May, but this one won't be attended by representatives of biotechnology firms. BioJustice is a week-long series of teach-ins, workshops, protests, marches, and celebrations being organized as a counterpart to the Biotechnology Industry Organization's International (BIO) international convention. Organizers of BioJustice criticize the biotechnology industry's activities in agriculture, medicine, and bioweaponry, and say that better alternatives are available.

Immigrants March to Stop the Raids, Full Legalization Now
IMG_0101.JPGBoston, Mass--It was 4:30 a.m. when they came banging on her door, waking her and everyone else in the house. She went to see what was going on. “Get down!” called out one of her housemates in a loud whisper, “La migra! Get on the floor!” She could barely see the men face down on the carpet but saw the shadows on the window and a bright flashlight that began scanning inside her living room. She ran back to her 4-year-old and locked herself up in the bedroom. She grabbed her child who immediately started whimpering sensing his mother’s panic. “Don’t cry, don’t make a sound. There are policemen outside who want to take us, take me away. We can’t let them hear us. Don’t say a word.” The child understood. Immigration officers had been raiding homes for days in his neighborhood, going after someone with an expired visa and arresting everyone within it without proper documentation. Mothers talked about it in corner stores, in laundry mats, at the playground.

“Not on our watch, not on our time!” The people of Massachusetts take action for a promise the world failed to keep: “Genocide: never again”
Darfur is dying.jpgIf you take a Philosophy class, one of the first lessons you are taught is that History repeats itself over and over again, simply because of our incapacity as people to learn from past mistakes. For the past 60 years, we have witnessed over 10 genocides - in Nazi Germany, Cambodia, but also Afghanistan, Tibet, Iraq and most recently, Bosnia and Rwanda. Although the world keeps being outraged and promises to never let it happen again, it quickly looses interest in it and watches more or less passively as new ones unfold.

Gonzales Protest - 1 (small).JPGCambridge, Mass. – Alberto Gonzales was confronted by student protesters and forced to leave through a back door on Saturday during a visit to Harvard Law School for his 25th reunion. After two weeks clinging to save his job and defending allegations that he fired eight U.S. Attorneys for political reasons, what might have been a relaxed day of reminiscing with old classmates became instead yet another reminder that both his job and his reputation are in serious jeopardy.
