The Massachusetts Department of Correction has come under intense scrutiny in recent months. Initial inquiries into the murder of defrocked priest John Geoghan last August, uncovered “systemic problems” in the state prison system. Since then Governor Mitt Romney has appointed a “blue-ribbon” commission to investigate the Department of Correction from “top to bottom”.
The state budget crunch and increased scrutiny of the prison system have provided an opportunity to reverse the “prison boom” in Massachusetts.
On Tuesday afternoon [1/20/04], activists, advocates, and progressive legislators gathered in downtown Boston to discuss strategies and priorities for influencing the Governor’s commission.
