Independent Media Center
The Independent Media Center is a global network of collectively run media outlets for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of truth. We are motivated by a love and inspiration for people who work for a better world despite corporate media's distortions and unwillingness to cover efforts to develop an egalitarian and sustainable society.
With autonomous chapters in more than 200 cities
across the world, the Independent Media Center network has become an international information source for media activists. The IMC seeks to create a new media ethic by providing progressive, in-depth, and accurate coverage of issues. We are a community-based organization using media to facilitate political and cultural self-representation. We seek to illuminate and analyze issues impacting individuals, communities and eco-systems by providing media tools and knowledge to those seeking to communicate.
The Boston Independent Media Center is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice in the boston Area. We are dedicated to addressing issues that the mainstream media neglects and we do not conceal our politics behind a false objectivity. We will empower people to "become the media" by providing democratic access to available technologies and information.
The following links connect folks who are interested in volunteering for Indymedia with the listserves that announce meetings, discuss policy, or communicate ideas. If you are trying to contact the collective for other reasons please use our general email address: boston.indymedia(at)gmail.com
The Announce List
The first and most important list to join for all potential and active volunteers is our announcement list. All Indymedia meetings and fundraising events are announced here. It is reserved for announcements only.
The Editorial List
This list is or main list and is used by active Boston Indymedia members to make editorial decisions for the site and general group decisions (finances, procedures, news coverage-see also Dispatch list). This is a closed list for Boston IMC active members only.
The Dispatch List
This is the listserv where budding Indymedia journalists cane pick up story ideas and distribute them. If you are a writer, photographer, videographer, or audio person and you want to publish to Indymedia this is for you.
This list is also for Press
Releases. If you come up with or hear of a great story idea for print, video, or radio, but don't have the time or urgent desire to cover it, you can send it to dispatch so others can pick it up. This list can also be used to just brainstorm ideas or ask for help on a story. If you're a writer and you want photos for your story, a video person who needs an interviewer, or an audio person who just needs a ride to an event you can use this list to find the folks you need.
The Discuss List
The Discuss list is where issues affecting the entire collective or more than one working group occur. Low traffic.
Working Group Lists
The Radio List
The Boston Radio group is currently working on setting up streaming radio on our website, bringing together local shows and content for a global audience. We have also compiled a list of the public affairs shows of independent radio stations in the Boston Metro area. Download this PDF to check out these excellent shows including John Grebe's Sounds of Dissent on WZBC 90.3FM.
The Video List
Indymedia produces documentaries, TV shows, and little PSA's for various projects. This is where the magic happens. Oh wait- that's over in hollywood. This is the real real deal here. The video group also organizes screenings and helps bring other indymedia video projects to our town.
The Tech List
The Boston IMC Tech group is responsible for what goes down behind the scenes on this website. We also deal with the server; working locally and with techs around the world who manage the global IMC's websites. We're always looking for ways to improve the website and integrate new technologies to build the online community; if you enjoy slinging code until the coffee runs out, get involved. We'd love to have you help out.
