G20 UPDATE: Street Battles in Pittsburgh

An unpermitted march called by the Pittsburgh G20 Resistance Project yesterday developed into a series of clashes with police across the city. The march began in Arsenal Park at about 2:45 PM with between 500 and 2,000 people, depending on whose estimate one believes.

Today at the UN in New York States are signing a treaty which by its exclusion of core obligations and the right to development will allow States to create a people more dependent on the State and the Corporations as well as discriminate against the poor. Many States (and Obama) are following such policies.

With the G-20 summit approaching, cheerful talk of “international cooperation” fills the White House press-room. These comments carry with them the implication that “free trade” is integral to “cooperation,” a fact made explicit in the last meeting of the G-20. There, in the name of “united action,” world leaders agreed not to install any new protectionist measures. Since then, protectionist measures have flourished. Instead of global cooperation we have its opposite: international tensions are on the rise as trade disputes sharpen.
