The Troops Out Now Coalition (TONC) wholeheartedly and unreservedly joins the activists and groups who are calling for a united mobilization against the war in the fall. The absence of such unity amongst the anti-war coalitions only serves to demoralize rank and file anti-war activists and local forces across the country. The grassroots of the movement are looking to those of us who make decisions to put our differences aside in the interests of the struggle to get the U.S. the hell out of Iraq.
While Massey Energy stockholders met at the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel in New York City, parents, grandparents, and other residents of
Coal River Valley, West Virginia rallied to oppose Massey's operations
adjacent to Marsh Fork Elementary School. Two grandmothers and a third
resident of the valley attempted to deliver a list of demands. The
residents were met by the plant's head of security who refused to
allow them to present their demands. When the residents again
attempted to present their demands, they were arrested in a moving and
dramatic act of civil conscience.
The Democrats finally had a plan to put a wrench in the Republican juggernaut—a shutdown of the Senate. And what did they do? Let a bunch of sell-out DLC-types blow it with a bi-partisan compromise that will just put more right-wing judges on the appellate bench.
