Wealthy Say, "No, Thank" to Tax Cuts: Responsible Tax Pledge Targets $69 Billion in Tax Breaks for Rich
06 Apr 2005
BOSTON-A group of wealthy Americans today announced that they would turn down their share of the $69 billion in tax cuts that went to the wealthy in 2004, and they called on other wealthy people to redirect their federal tax breaks to support fairer taxes through a campaign called the Responsible Tax Pledge.

"It's obscene that Washington is handing out tax breaks to millionaires with one hand and shredding the safety net with the other," said Marta Drury, Responsible Wealth member. "I want it to stop, so I'm calculating my 2004 tax cut and donating it to organizations fighting for responsible, fair and adequate taxes. I don't believe that people like me with incomes over $200,000 need $69 billion in tax cuts."

The Coming Civil War and Repolarization for Revolution in the Present Era
06 Apr 2005
Just to be clear, I didn't choose this title lightly or facetiously, but in all seriousness. In speaking to "a coming civil war" I am "drawing inspiration" from Newt Gingrich (the prominent Republican politician who was formerly the Speaker of the House of Representatives), who has made the observation that what's happening now in the electoral arena and the broader things that it reflects in U.S. society is analogous to what was going on in the U.S. in the 1840s and the 1850s, and that this isn't something that will—I'm paraphrasing, but this is the essence—this isn't something that will go away. It will only be decided when one side or the other wins out.

The president is tightly controlling who gets into his Social Security public gatherings. No surprise there. But why aren’t Democrats complaining that tickets are only being offered to Republican members of Congress?

Iraq War Goes on Trial in Upstate NY
06 Apr 2005
On March 17, 2003, four Catholic Workers from Ithaca NY walked into a local military recruiting station, poured blood on the walls, posters, flag, and carpet, knelt for prayer, and waited for the authorities. Surprisingly, in April 2004, the prosecution of the four war resistors in state court ended in a mistrial, with the jury deadlocked 9-3 in favor of acquittal. Four months later, however, the federal government jumped into the fray and issued subpoenas. With the trial to start this summer in Binghamton, NY, the "St. Patrick Four" face six years in prison (or more) if convicted. Provided is an audio link to an exclusive, in-studio interview with the four defendants.
