FBI stages unprecedented raid on congressman’s office
24 May 2006
The FBI conducted a search of the office of Louisiana Representative William Jefferson over the weekend in what is the first such intrusion by an agency of the executive branch into the office of a sitting congressman in US history. In a press conference on Monday, Jefferson, a Democrat, denounced the raid as an “outrageous intrusion into the separation of powers.”
The raid on Jefferson’s office in the Rayburn House Office Building on Saturday night was a politically motivated breach of constitutional boundaries aimed at asserting the power of the executive branch over the legislative. It is yet another political marker in the government’s moves towards dictatorial forms of rule.

Gen. Hayden: A Yes-Man for All Seasons
24 May 2006
The general, like all officers in the military, took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, not to mindlessly follow the orders of the president. He should be getting court-martialed, not appointed CIA director.

Should Noam Chomsky Reset His Compass?
23 May 2006
Noam Chomsky was interviewed for the 2005 book, “Imperial Ambitions.” In it, he addressed the Iraqi War, but he failed to take on the hawkish Neocons. Chomsky said the war was about the “control of oil.” He also ignored the influential Israeli Lobby’s role in agitating for the conflict. In the introduction, a colleague said that he “misses nothing.” Question: How can that be true, if Chomsky missed the six ton elephant in the room - the Israeli Lobby?

Phelps, Corpses, and Dollar $Democracy
23 May 2006
Can this Janus-faced* country actually learn something from the Phelps charade of civic concern?

We gays and lesbians of America will only gain what is our birthright when we refuse to step back, refuse to go to the back door, refuse to accept only crumbs from the big table. If this sounds like the civil rights talk of the 1960's, you're right. Only when we throw a social wrench in the business and political gears of our country will we be recognized for our valuable contributions to the fabric of humanity.

Impeachment: A Winning Argument
23 May 2006
Modified: 01:25:43 PM
Even if they win, the Democrats in Congress can’t do anything while the president claims the right to ignore acts duly passed by the House and Senate. To pass a Democratic agenda, this president would have to be removed.

George McGovern on class relations in America
23 May 2006
It would be hard to find more compelling evidence of the bankruptcy of Democratic Party liberalism and the fundamental hostility of this big business party to the interests of the working class than an opinion column published in Monday’s Los Angeles Times under the byline of former South Dakota Senator George McGovern.
The column, headlined “The End of More,” amounts to a brief for why American workers must accept ever-deeper cuts in their wages and benefits, and a justification for the lavish salaries and bonuses handed out to the CEOs who impose these cuts.
McGovern has been out of office for more than 25 years. As the 1972 Democratic presidential candidate, who challenged incumbent Republican Richard Nixon on an anti-Vietnam War platform, he has long been regarded as an icon of Democratic Party liberalism. The primary function of his unsuccessful candidacy was to channel the broad radicalization that was developing in the US over the war back into the confines of bourgeois politics and the two-party system.
