Lessons of a Left Victory in France
12 Apr 2006
France's leading bureaucrats, from President Jacques Chirac on down, have been defeated. French neo-liberalism -- the dismantling of its welfare state in favor of business -- has suffered a serious blow. A powerful alliance of high-school and university students and of organized labor achieved the victory against the government's law that undercut job security for workers under 26 years of age. The alliance forced Chirac to annul the law -- exactly what he and the other current leaders had said was absolutely illegal and impossible. Now what matters most is how everyone in France and beyond -- business and political conservatives, on one side, and students, labor unions, and the left, on the other side -- will understand what has happened. Their different understandings will shape how both sides adjust their respective organizations, strategies, and tactics.

French government withdraws “First Job Contract,” enlists unions in assault on job security
11 Apr 2006
President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin announced yesterday that new legislation will be drawn up to replace the “First Job Contract” (CPE), which sparked a massive wave of protests and strikes in recent weeks.
Leaders of the trade unions, some student unions and “left” political parties immediately declared the shift marked a decisive victory for the anti-CPE movement and signalled their intention to halt further mass mobilisations against the government.
Demagogic claims of “victory” by the unions and the “left” parties represent a betrayal of the anti-CPE movement. Their endorsement of the Gaullist government’s latest manoeuvre politically disarms workers and youth and paves the way for future free-market measures aimed at dismantling established workers’ rights and social conditions.
From the outset, the unions and the official “left” parties—the Socialist Party and the Communist Party—sought to stabilise the Chirac-Villepin administration and dissipate the movement of students, high school youth and workers in order to prevent it from challenging the French capitalist state.

Paul Wolfowitz’s Heart of Darkness
11 Apr 2006
Now, War Hawks within the Bush-Cheney Gang are planning a First-Strike against Iran. It may come just before the Nov. midterm elections. The Neocon Paul Wolfowitz concocted the notion of a Pre-emptive War. His target, in 2003, was Iraq. Every time I hear Wolfowitz’s name mentioned, I curse him for all the deaths and suffering that his scheme has caused to the peoples of that unfortunate country, our brave troops and to our dwindling treasury.
