My Husband is at the Gates of Guantanamo: Why I Support Him |
by Jessica Stewart |
12 Dec 2005

Twenty-five U.S. citizens, calling themselves Witness Against Torture, are presently demonstrating, fasting and praying at the gates of the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay. For the last five days, they've marched across Cuba to get to the prison. One of them is my husband, Danny Burns.
Danny and I have two children. Finian is three years old and Francis is seven months. Danny is at Guantanamo in part because of our family. In other words, here's a chance that gets a pig to sweating and salivating with anticipation--a chance to "kill a nigger" with the already provided cover that a Black man--a Black man, any Black man--was reported in the area with a gun. This is an opportunity too good to pass up: "Go on, shoot him--it's free!" |

You know it's hard to get news from Iraq. Even news from imbedded reporters rarely makes it to the American airways— you hardly know a war is going on. But, for people in Baghdad, and the rest of Iraq, the war is simply impossible to ignore. Brian Conley, a young independent journalist, decided to go to Iraq and see for himself what has been continually overlooked. |
