Miguel Fernandez is a labor activist and President of the Cauca Teachers Union in Colombia. Miguel recently returned to Colombia after spending several months working with Eastern Massachusetts Jobs with Justice through a program that brings Colombian trade unionists who have been targeted for death by paramilitary groups to the U.S. Miguel has received four death threats in the last ten days, one of which was aimed at his entire family.

Thomas Miller-El wins new trial

miller-el133.jpgIn a six-to-three decision on June 13, the U.S. Supreme Court sharply rebuked Texas prosecutors as well as Texas appeals courts, ruling that their excuses for racism in jury selection are unconstitutional.

The conviction of Thomas Miller-El, an African American man sentenced to death in Dallas in 1986, was thrown out. Now—after spending over 19 years on death row—he will be granted a new trial.

A co-founder of France's Green Party in 1984, Ginette Skandrani, has been expelled after a trial by the party's regional administrative committee in the Ile de France region, which includes Paris and its suburbs, after formal complaints were filed against her, the center-left Parisian daily Liberation reported today -- under the headline, "A Green Too Brown for Her Party".
