In about 96 journal publications, Ross and his colleagues discovered internal Merck documents and e-mail messages pertaining to clinical study reports and review articles, some of which were developed by the company’s marketing department, not its scientific department. In others, there is little evidence that the authors recruited for the report made substantial contribution to the research itself.

How can we rebuild our society so we manage with less growth and not collapse when growth does not occur? Consumption beyond a certain level that we all need is pathological, a compensation or substitute for missed life (cf. Erich Fromm). A moderate increase of the top tax rate could signal that we all sit in the same boat.

The battle is between poor and rich, not young against old. In Germany, the political reforms of the past twelve years relieved the wealthy and employers. The top tax rate and corporation taxes were lowered. Then the low-wage sector was developed so employers saved costs for social security.
