Fortune Cookies Predict that Shaw's Will Go GE Free in 2003 (english)
07 Feb 2003
Greenpeace delivers fortune cookies to Shaw's Headquarters. Calls for Shaw's to take genetically engineered ingredients from their store brand products.
On Wednesday, February 5, Greenpeace, delivered a box of fortune cookies to Paul Gannon, the CEO of Shaw's and Star Markets, at the headquarters located in Bridgewater, Massachusetts in celebration of Chinese New Year. The fortune cookies contained a message that said, “Shaw's will go GE-free in 2003.” New England consumers are calling on Shaw's to remove genetically engineered ingredients from their store brand products. Genetically engineered ingredients pose serious risks for our health and environment.

Genetic engineering is a dangerous experiment with our food supply. Despite industry claims that genetically engineered foods are safety tested, there are currently no specific mandatory testing requirements for genetically engineered foods in the US. Some of the risks of genetically engineered food include the development of new food allergies, increased pesticide use, and the creation of living genetic pollution.

In Europe, the parent company of Shaw's, J.Sainsbury's has already removed all genetically engineered ingredients from its store brand products, but refuses to do the same in the US. American consumers have the right to safe food as well as Europeans. Other national supermarket chains including Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Trader Joes have eliminated genetically engineered ingredients from their store brand products in the US. If they can, so can Shaw's.

Call Paul Gannon today at 508.313.4000, and tell him that you want Shaw's to go “GE Free in 2003,” and stop using genetically engineered ingredients from their store brand products.
