Star of David caregivers vote for one-day strike to stop cuts in service (english)
07 Feb 2003
Management's proposed cut in hours will impact quality of care
Boston, MA Ė Caregivers and other employees at the Star of David nursing home in West Roxbury voted today for a strike on February 19 to stop managementís unfair labor practices.

Workers at the home are frustrated by managementís insistence on cutting their service hours from 40 to 37 Ĺ hours and itís refusal to make improvements in pay and staffing. It is an unfair labor practice to unilaterally change workers pay and working conditions while the union negotiating committee is still bargaining with management.

Star of David is owned by the giant Kindred Healthcare nursing home chain. Employees formed a new union with SEIU Local 285 in October 2001.

ďAll we are asking is for the same pay and conditions that other unionized Kindred nursing homes workers have already achieved,Ē said Wesner Simplice, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) who has worked at the Star of David for 17 years.

Kindred workers at Crawford Skilled Nursing & Rehab in Fall River, Country Gardens nursing home in Swansea, Sachem Skilled Nursing & Rehab in East Bridgewater, and Country Manor nursing home in Newburyport are also members of SEIU. All of these homes agreed to sign union contracts in 2002.

Immediately after the vote today, members notified management of the strike date so that arrangements for continued care of the residents can be made. In the meantime, the negotiating committee is ready and willing to meet with management at any time to avert a strike. About 85 employees are in the union bargaining unit.
