Media Manipulation
Secretary of State Colin Powell -- who the North American media portrays as the most trusted statesman in the U.S. -- presented the long awaited evidence to the United Nations Security Council last Wednesday. The reaction to his speech varied from “stunt with special effects” to “irrefutable” but his speech became the main theme on the media during the next couple of days.

“Did Mr. Powell convince the world with the evidence he presented?

Will France & Germany, after hearing the evidence, finally decide to go along with the U.S.?

What did the Europeans think about the evidence?

What will the foreign media say after seeing the evidence?”

These were the kind of questions repeated over and over again on TV screens that very same day all day long. This was also the main subject of the program called “Newsnight with Aaron Brown” on CNN the same night [1]. Aaron Brown showed his audience headlines from the early editions of several newspapers from Detroit, Moscow, Jerusalem and London on enlarged printouts. “Irrefutable Evidence” read the headline on the February 6th edition of the Jerusalem Post and “The Evidence” said the Daily Telegraph from London. A few minutes later, came the guest of honour of the show: the former Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger.

“Did Colin Powell close the deal today in your mind for anyone who has yet objectively to make up their mind?” asked Aaron Brown.

“I think for anybody who analyzes the situation, he has closed the deal…” was the answer from Dr. Kissinger. This was of course pretty much in line with the headlines from the Jerusalem Post and the Daily Telegraph.

To many unsuspected viewers, former Secretary of State Dr. Kissinger was just another “convinced” world citizen who happened to be in agreement with the Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post and the British newspaper Daily Telegraph. But to a few, including me, that was not the perception. I personally found it surprising that Aaron Brown forgot to mention an important detail at his show.

Jerusalem Post and Daily Telegraph newspapers are 100% owned by one of world’s largest media corporations Hollinger International [2]. One of the directors at the Hollinger International is Richard Perle [3], who is the White House foreign policy advisor and the chairman of the US Defense Policy Board. And the guest of honour at the show, Dr. Kissinger, is not only the former Secretary of State, he is also one of the directors at the same media giant Hollinger International [4].

CNN advertises itself as the “most trusted name in the news.” However, I have yet to see a concrete evidence that would support that claim.
