The First Casualty of War (english)
20 Feb 2003
a poem

the hunt is on—
the arabs are hiding
in the underbrush
the terrorists
are in the bushes

you would see it in their eyes
the fear
but they are not looking
to you the people
they are looking to the guns
their ears are to the cell phones
they are counting their blessed munitions
and composing themselves
treatises to the media correspondents
on the other end of the line

a line drawn in the sand
a black line by which
the blood of nations are drawn out
and burned to fuel the hatred
that consumes all but the need for more
blood more
war mongering
leaders draw up
contracts behind closed doors and
drum up support for a new line

how many stocks
to buy how many barrels
to load an explosive
package of immeasurable value
at a price commensurate
to the discriminating taste
of high class consumers

with no interest paid
until the markets have been redrawn
and traditional territories torn
to make way for the manifest destiny
of the american hordes:
to live in-
justice for all and for all the freedom
to choose between the lesser of two

to live like guerrillas in the underbrush
or to embrace the military state
either way they are named
by what they hate
and what they love must turn to sand
to be divided
in the name of protecting the conventions of one
or the other’s liberties
and in the end to interpret
what is good for all
and stand up just

what’s right
