Were you arrested? Are you okay? (english)
27 Feb 2003
Modified: 01 Mar 2003
I was also there.

I spoke to one of the organizers tonight. They're still unsure how many people were arrested and what charges, as well as if anyone was hurt. This is info that should be had. Since I haven't yet checked about giving out his email, you may contact me and I'll pass it on.

At least one local lawyer, recommended by the ACLU, told me he'd be willing to help.

It speaks volumes that: 1) the cops didn't want to tell me who was in charge, so I could find out where people were taken. 2) I was first told people were taken to Cambridge --but when I called there, they said no, and suggested Medford. 3) I then called Medford, and was told that there were people at other locations as well, but they didn't know where, and they didn't know how many people they had. Not even a ballpark figure. And as for my statement that we wanted to bail people out, they had to be processed, and then they'd each make a phone call, and each be released. Helpful, huh?

As for the cops -- ugly-acting, indeed -- most belonged to the Northeastern Mass. Law Enforcement Council's Regional Response Team (gleaned from their jackets' insignia). However, although they had these decals on the sleeves, they DID NOT have badges! (For anyone not there, it was 12 degrees today, and they were quite properly wearing jackets. Their mothers must have been on their case.) Maybe this will be of some use in defense.

Back at the campus, they started shoving us back off the street onto the sidewalk, white batons in front being used to shove us. (I don't if white batons mean what they used to -- they used to signify lead.) There were very nearly quite a few more arrests.

Finally, for anyone who missed it, I heard a couple of radio news stories about a student yelling out "Liar!" while Bush Sr. was talking. His response? "Liar? No, no!"

Aside from the pigs, it was a good-sized, lively, fun and well-organized demo.

A general comment about arrests: People being arrested should call out their names. People watching should write them down, and observe the physical condition of people until they're taken away. (That way you know if they're injured on the way to jail.) If possible, you should go to jail with them, or behind them -- and again, observe their condition when they get out. Also, of course, bail them -- they need cash for the bondsman. (In this case, the crowd donated generously.) If arrests are expected, arrange for legal assistance ahead of time.

As I started to save this on my computer, I found myself looking at another file: "2-15, police brutality . . ." -- it's getting awfully familiar lately. And if anyone doesn't know it yet, among other things, the mounted pigs there rode straight into demonstrators at least twice, injuring people of course.

Badges (english)

I was on the front lines on the demo across from the theatre. The guy next to me started making his speech and thats when the pigs came stomping across the street to push us back with using the batons and sheilds toghether.
Clearly somebody just didn't want the audience to hear that speech whether it was in the theatre or outside of the theatre. This is just more stifleing of freedom of speech except this time not through twisted laws like the USA PATRIOT Act but actual physical force.
As for the whole badge issue when we were all standing toe to toe with the Bush's lackey's in their black armor everyone was talking about it. At one point the guy next to me asked one of the cops "So really gusy were are the badges?" and he said "We would wear them if they would give them to us."
So I don't know what to think about that. I personally think he was full of shit.

There is much helpful information for this kind of situation at www.midnightspecial.net including a police misconduct form for legal observers.
