COMMUNISM, CAPITALISM, and CAMPING
COMMUNISM, CAPITALISM, and CAMPING

I spent the Canada Day weekend this year camping with my daughter in Allegheny State Park in New York State. As I usually do, I bought way more firewood than I need. Contemplating my stack of cut wood, I decided it was symbolic of the difference between Communism and Capitalism.

It is my contention that EVERYONE in a capitalist system is a capitalist. I work for an employer, I sell him my labor, he pays me. ALL workers are capitalists!

When I go camping, I don't feel like cutting down trees, so I take the money earned by selling my labor, and go in search of another capitalist that had used HIS labor to produce cut firewood. I gave him money, and he gave me firewood. Indirectly, my labor produced that cut wood. When I had my campfire, it was a direct result of my labor. I was entirely FREE to buy as much or as little as I wanted! Ah, the freedom of capitalism!

What would a communist make of this? Would he come along and say "comrade, you have so much firewood, but these other people over there have none. You must share with them." That's the way things stand now. Any commie that comes along and asks for my wood, I can tell to take a hike. (hey, we are camping)

Keep in mind also that I bought my wood with after tax dollars, so I've already contributed to help those that can't afford their own wood!

So, what happens if the commies take over? then they say, "You are obviously an evil capitalist exploiter sitting there with your giant pile of firewood. You are benefitting from the labor of some poor exploited worker. We will take it and give it to the poor freezing workers, sitting in the dark. You probably stole the wood anyway!" So, they take my firewood, then they ship me to a re-education camp for my crime of capitalist exploitation!

So, now the commies are in charge, and I want to go camping. (Of course, after the re-education camp, I don't think I'll be in too big a hurry to rough it!) Do I just go? NO NO NO!

Remember, wages are abolished under communism, so I have no money for frill such as camping. I must see my Recreation Commissar to apply for a camping permit. The Commisar will decide if I am worthy. It will depend partially on how enthusiastic I have been in the weekly indoctrination and self-analysis sessions. If the Recreation Commissar approves, I will be issued my permit, my tent (leaking) and my supplies. Remember, all private property is abolished. Camping is a frill, so all camping supplies will become common property to be issued as needed. I will take public transit to the campground, where my official wood allotment will be provided. Of course, it will probably be insufficient and punky. However, all citizens must share in the wood shortages.

Of course, high ranking Communist Party Officials will go to separate campgrounds where the wood will be top quality and lots of it.

In conclusion, my pile of firewood represents the freedom of capitalism, the right to self-determination, the right to live as you see fit. That firewood represents the fruit of my labor, earned by me for me. I order my own life, I decide what is important, I pursue my own goals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How different things would be under communism. Everything for the "common good". Who decides the common good? Not the workers, even communist propagandists don't believe that. The elite of the Communist Party will decide. THEY will decide what is good, what is to be done! They will direct the course of society. The workers will only exist to perpetuate the existance of the Party!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, what did I do with the left over wood? As I was breaking camp, someone came by and asked if they could have it. I said sure, help yourself and enjoy. That's another attribute of capitalism, The ability to freely share and help others. Communism will take away that freedom as well!
