Ciggs & Coke consumed during rally
28 Mar 2000
Genetic Engineering of food effects everyone, even if they still smoke and drink Coke.
I agree that smoking is bad for the person and bad for the environment, but the fact is many people (including myself) are addicted to ciggs. I am currently trying to quit, but it will be about my 50th time. Coke too, I drink it and one day took a Coke to the Biodev 2000 conference. I had only heard whispers about Coke, that they use GE ingrediants too. I am trying to give up the active ingrediant in Coke too. But, for now, I am still addicted.

The thing about GE food is that it effects everyone. The non-environmentalist. The non-vegetarian (I am a meat eater too). It's so dangerous because it's almost impossible to avoid. It would be great if the whole county could switch to organic food and anyone who smokes could stop all at the same time. However, everyone knows this won't happen.

We can't just limit the people behind the protest to those who adhere to strict diets, are non-smokers, don't eat meat, etc. We need the support of everyone it effects - which is just about everyone, no matter what their lifestyle.

I will continue to try and quit the things I know are bad for me. But, even if I fail at that, I will continue to try and stop genetic engineering of food. I hope nobody will tell me I can't be a part of this movement because I don't adhere to their standards. They would be cutting out millions of supporters before they've had a chance to get behind the issue.
