Did MIT's IDA Plan Baghdad Conquest? (english)
05 Mar 2003
MIT=linked IDA planing urban warfare for Pentagon
The Institute of Defense Analyses (IDA), whose board of trustees includes
two MIT representatives, may have developed the Pentagon's plans for a
ground attack on Baghdad. The IDA web site describes how this Pentagon
weapons research think-tank has been attempting to find "better ways to
fight in urban areas" like Baghdad for the Pentagon, as the following
excerpt from the IDA web site at indicates--bob

"Finding Better Ways to Fight in Urban Areas

IDA has been using tools we developed for assessing future combat operations
to examine the performance of new development programs for urban warfare.
Much of this work was conducted in support of the advanced concept
technology demonstration (ACTD) on military operations in urban terrain

IDA established the Analysis Integration Group, which coordinates modeling,
simulation, and related analyses for the MOUT ACTD in the areas of
experimentation, force effectiveness, and the utility of alternative
technology mixes. We also developed analytic methods for evaluating complex
test results. These analyses are being used to design future tests to ensure
the data collected provide relevant insights on the contributions of new

IDA researchers also have played a key role in two joint, companylevel
experiments and a battalion-level capstone demonstration. We planned the
experimental design, analysis, and data collection methodology, and will
apply these techniques to an extended user evaluation of MOUT ACTD systems."

MIT is represented on the IDA board of trustees by the following two MIT
