Caregivers at Courtyard Nursing Home will rally for living wages, quality care (english)
12 Mar 2003
More than 150 caregivers and other employees at the Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford will rally for a new contract on March 12 hoping to make improvements in the quality of care and their pay and working conditions. Union members will vote to authorize strike, if necessary.
Medford, MA – More than 150 caregivers and other employees at the Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford have been negotiating with management for a new contract hoping to make improvements in the quality of care and their pay and working conditions.

Courtyard is owned by a partnership between the giant Genesis Elder Care nursing home chain, New England Medical Center and Hallmark Healthcare.

Workers at Courtyard are asking for living wages, fair schedules, affordable health insurance, and safer working conditions. However, Courtyard management has so far refused to give its employees a reasonable contract offer.

"We do some of the hardest work imaginable. We’re on the front line. We should have good jobs. That’s what our residents deserve and what our community needs," said Barbara Hilaire, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Courtyard who has worked in the industry for more than eight years. “Our start rates are ridiculously low. Health care costs too much and there’s no pension or life insurance. This company shows us no respect whatsoever.”

Workers will rally on Wednesday, March 12 from 2:00 to 4:30 pm in front of the nursing home on the grounds of Lawrence Memorial Hospital (170 Governors Ave, Medford). At the rally union members will decide in a secret ballot vote about giving their negotiating committee the power to authorize a strike to stop management’s unfair labor practices.

If a majority votes to authorize a strike, a strike date will be set by the union negotiating committee.

Courtyard employees' formed their union with SEIU Local 285 in April 1999.
