Why divestment marches should rock the campuses this Fall, from MIT, to B.U, to Berkeley:

See today's TORONTO STAR, on that unanimous union vote to boycott Israel, at
long last....

"A democratic decision:

"This was not imposed on the membership by an autocratic leadership but
voted for unanimously"

Jun. 2, 2006. 01:00 AM

On the Web at:

"In the wake of CUPE Ontario's decision to support an international boycott
of Israel and to support Palestinian rights, the press has been full of
letters and editorials condemning the union — but for contradictory reasons.
On the one hand, the union is accused of taking up "political" and "global"
issues that don't represent its members' interests. On the other hand, the
union is accused of "singling out" Israel when it should target other states
instead. CUPE's critics can't have it both ways.

"The trade union movement in Canada has a long tradition of building
international solidarity for oppressed people around the world — an act not
incompatible with fighting for the day-to-day interests (wages, working
conditions, benefits, etc.) of its own members. Canadian unions were among
the first that, amid similar controversy, supported a boycott of apartheid
South Africa in the 1980s. Today, we reflect on such campaigns with pride.

"Furthermore, CUPE Ontario's decision was an impressive act of democracy.
Nearly 900 elected delegates — the largest convention in the union's history
— participated in the discussion and debate about the boycott while many of
them had already passed similar resolutions at the local level.

"This was not a decision imposed on the membership by an autocratic
leadership. The members themselves made an informed and democratic decision.
Just because some critics disagree with the decision, doesn't make it

"As pressure mounts on Israel to respect international law, debates like
these will continue. And so, too, will the accusations that Israel is being
"singled out" from other states. The reality, however, is that Israel is
being held to the same international standard that we've come to expect from
countries that claim to be "democracies." Statehood means more than just
status; it also means accountability and responsibility to the international
community. It's time that Israel accepted this fact.

"James Clark, Toronto

"CUPE's boycott of Israel

"I am writing in support of CUPE Ontario's passing of resolution 50. I am a
Jewish woman and am a part of a large and ever-growing community of Jews
across Canada who support this resolution and who are working for justice
for the Palestinian people.

"It is time the media pay some attention to these other voices out here, the
voices calling for an end to the grave human, civil and social rights
violations perpetrated against the Palestinian people by the state of

Is the divestment movement back, at M.I.T.?
Who Will divest from whom?
02 Jun 2006
Israel has more invested in this country through ownership or part ownership of high tech and medical/biotech co. than the US has in Israel. Plus Israeli defense technology is used both by our military and intellegence services I dont think the US will be divesting from Israel any time soon. Our dumb public school graduates don't like math; so Israel and India will have to run our modern industries for us.

Shut up and go to work!
Zionists picnic on Good Deli

I like the Zionist picnic sign. Zionist picnics are better than lefty picnics. Great pastrami. No mayo on white bread crap.

And open bar. Contrary to antiSemite myth, Jews are not cheap and they do know how to party.

Wow, that sign is going to win a lot of people over.
Palestine will outlive its racist Israeli invaders.
04 Jun 2006
You complain about a mere protest sign?

Think about the divestment movement at Harvard, which is coming back in the Fall.

Over 4,000 Palestinians have been murdered by Israel, just since 2000, on Palestinian land.
Re: Divest from Apartheid Israel

Yep, and those working for justice for the Palestinians will continue to be set back by people who are greeat at giving impassioned denunciations, but couldn't communicate or convince anyone of a thing.

Talk around Cambridge is all about 9-11, not divestment. But then that just reflects the national trend. heck, for some reason the New York Times today felt it had to cover a big meeting of tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists. Maybe because as they acknowledge in their article, 42% of Americans and rising think Bush's government is covering up their complicity in the attacks. that's more people than ever voted for BJ OR W. a big majority of the people who believe the al Qaeda fairy tale never heard of building 7. When they do, which side do you think they'll fall on? Maybe the same side as an increasing number of veterans ( Yeah, I think maybe. Here's a tip to fans of the official story--it's probably a good time to quietly switch sides, before you end up on the wrong side of a civil war.

"South African union joins boycott of Israel"

Very brief excerpt:

"Workers union representing 1.2 million extols CUPE Ontario’s boycott of Israel, which it calls 'an apartheid nation.'

"Union President Madisha: Atrocities committed against the Palestinians pale in comparison to those committed by the erstwhile apartheid regime in South Africa

by Ronen Bodoni

"Call to boycott Israel spreading. In additional to the boycott of Israel declared by British academics and public workers in Canada last month, now a large workers' union in South Africa is shunning the Jewish state in protest of its policies towards the Palestinians.

"The Congress of South African Trade Unions, representing 1.2 million workers in the African country, published a letter expressing enthusiastic support for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) boycott of Israel. In CUPE's boycott declaration, the organization calls Israel's separation fence an 'apartheid wall' and condemns its continued construction as in violation of international law. They further called for divestment from Israel and demanded the imposition of sanctions.

"In his letter, COSAFU president Willie Madisha hailed the Canadian group's initiative: 'With great pride, I congratulate CUPE Ontario for their historic resolution on May 27th in support of the Palestinian people - those living under occupation and those millions of Palestinian refugees living in the Diaspora. We fully support your resolution.

" 'As someone who lived in apartheid South Africa and who has visited Palestine I say with confidence that Israel is an apartheid state. In fact, I believe that some of the atrocities committed against the Palestinians pale in comparison to those committed by the erstwhile apartheid regime in South Africa,' Madisha wrote...."
