Bystanders feel safe, happy with protesters (english)
31 Mar 2003
As thousands marched against the war in Iraq, a friendly Boston crowd watched from sidewalks and park benches. Many parents had turned their baby carriages toward the protesters and some could be seen bending over to explain what was going on to their children. As always, people could be seen pointing with great interest at the signs carried by Veterans for Peace. And the more hysterical signs drew laughter, particularly one that said: "War is how Americans learn geography!"
No one seemed worried or tense or unhappy about the presence of the large and very vocal crowd. Most of the people offered peace signs, applause, or V for victory signs. Only a few stood by silently watching, but they were respectful and showed no hostility or fear in their faces.
This was all very encouraging to me as I had spent quite a bit of time listening to frightening and divisive news broadcasts since the US led attack on Iraq. The fact that there were many calm, friendly, and welcoming people embracing antiwar protesters in Boston, raised my spirits and calmed my nerves. It was clear that no one was afraid of this dedicated group of caring people. I was glad to be there.
