22 Oct 2000
rally on monday, oct 23, to protest the tufts judiciary committee decision that a christian campus group could refuse to allow an out lesbian member to hold office within the group was NOT in violation of the campus non-discrimination policy.

The non-discrimination policy has been effectively nullified here at Tufts! We will not allow this to go unanswered. PLEASE show your solidarity Monday Oct. 23 at the rally here.

Thank you for your support!

This is Mike Lambert, Co-Coordinator of the Tufts Transgender Lesbian Gay Bisexual Collective and I NEED YOUR HELP! I'll try and be as brief and concise as possible.

On Tuesday our Judiciary voted that a Tufts Christian group that blatantly discriminated against a lesbian student by denying her a leadership position based on her sexual orientation, was NOT IN VIOLATION OF THE TUFTS
NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY. The logic behind their decision is extremely convoluted so I'll try to simplify it.
Basically they stated that an individual's sexual orientation and their belief about that orientation are completely separate. The Christian group believed that homosexuality was immoral. Therefore, while you can identify as a gay person in this Christian group, you cannot be a self-affirming homosexual. In effect, the only way for you to be in this group is if you actively profess to hate yourself because you are gay and therefore
"immoral". This creates an extremely large "ideological" loophole and serves to nullify our entire non-discrimination policy as it applies to EVERY GROUP ON CAMPUS.
Imagine the following: I could create a group on campus that excludes all black people by merely saying that one of the criteria for joining is that you must hate black people. Obviously, no black people would join. This
exclusion is based on ideology instead of a member's actual race so according to our University, THIS IS PERFECTLY LEGAL.

Basically this decision is completely absurd and we need your help. Currently we're organizing for a MASSIVE rally next Monday afternoon. We need to hear from leaders of local groups in the Boston area. PLEASE CONTACT US ASAP. We need your help and a commitment from your groups.
The more groups we have the more of an impact this rally will have. This rally is the first step in showing our solidarity and power. If hundreds show up at this rally, we'll have a clear mandate and leverage in the fight to come. If it fails, no one will take us seriously.

Directions to Davis Sq.- Please aim to be here by 2:45
Take the Red Line to the Davis stop. Either exit from the station will put you in the line of sight of the Square itself. Meet across the street from Somerville Theater. We will march from the Square to the University a little after 3pm. The walk takes about 15 minutes.

Directions to Tufts and the library roof- Please aim to be here by 3:30. Take the Red Line to the Davis stop. Exit the station towards Holland Ave. Cross the street directly in front of the station and look for the street sign that says "Tufts Shuttle". Take the shuttle to the Campus Center. The library is the large stone building on the hill. The roof is level with the top of the hill.
