Press release:

"No More Atomic Turkeys!"

The Citizens Awareness Network (CAN) will hold a benefit pre-Thanksgiving concert and dance with the holiday theme of "No More Atomic Turkeys!" at West Street Arts in West Dummerston, VT on Friday November 3rd at 8pm.
For the past decade, CAN has been in the forefront of the struggle to shut down New England's nuclear reactors. Most recently, CAN has been in a legal battle to stop the sale of Vermont Yankee to AmerGen, a multinational corporation with a history of massive firings at reactors they've purchased.
This legal action has been extremely expensive and it is only through the generous donations of individuals that CAN has been able to carry on this fight. The Vermont Public Service Board's decision on the sale of VY has just been delayed due to eleventh hour negotiations. This will mean even more legal fees for CAN. CAN is a non-profit, volunteer, anti-nuclear organization that has active chapters in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York state and Vermont.
Dancing and listening music for the event will be provided by the John Sheldon Band and Derrik Jordan at West Street Arts, which has a large and excellent dance floor.
John Sheldon, who was Van Morrison's guitar player at age seventeen, moved to Leverett, Mass in 1990 to take a break from the music business, raise a family, and clean up after horses. Whilst cleaning out horse stalls he began noticing melodies and lyrics running through his head, so he would dash into the house (pausing to wipe his feet), and write or record his ideas. He formed a little combo, Blue Streak, and began playing the songs in local bars and at parties. Tapes and CD's followed, including a collaboration with James Taylor, and John is now famous within a one hour drive of his home.
Opening the evening is Derrik Jordan, a well-known local musician who has been an organizer for CAN in Vermont for the past three years. Playing guitar, keyboards and electric violin, his music can be described as "positive pop and globally conscious soul." His CD,"Expecting A Miracle," co-produced with Tom "T-Bone" Wolk, is being re-issued on Lost GoldRecords and his song "Something Beautiful" is being released as a single to Adult Contemporary radio in January of 2001.
Please come and support CAN in their efforts to raise money to oppose the sale of Vermont Yankee and to shut it down permanently. Admission is by donation. There will be refreshments. West St Arts is located in the old West Dummerston Grange. Take Route 30 north from Brattleboro for 5 miles and turn left on West St. For more information call (802)387-4050.
