Organizers expect large crowds at the fourth annual “Death & Taxes Resistance Festival” on Saturday, April 12th in front of the IRS. Concerned citizens from all over New England will converge, in front of the Internal Revenue Service in Andover, MA and then proceed to the Raytheon Weapons Plant, situated only ¼ mile down the road.

With the strong possibility of war this year, organizers expect this event to continue highlighting the destructive priorities of our national budget, where over $.47 of every tax dollar goes for militaristic purposes. Raytheon is the third largest military contractor in the US and the leading producer of the Tomahawk missile that played a major role in the recent war in Afghanistan killed over 4,000 civilians. The Tomahawk is a likely weapon-of-choice in future military action’s against Iraq. Raytheon has profited greatly from the war. Its stock rose 46% in the early days of the war in Afghanistan and closed the year with $8.5 billion in sales. (Despite their huge profits, Raytheon recently announced layoffs of over 300 employees.

“The Raytheon plant is just a few miles from Lawrence, one of the poorest cities in the country. While the federal government gives Raytheon tens of billions of dollars to build weapons components in Andover, Lawrence's schools, low-income housing programs, environmental initiatives and social service agencies are under-funded,” said Rose Gonzalez one of the event organizers. “We seek an immediate conversion from weapons production to purposes that are consistent with the needs of the community, not wealthy CEO’s and shareholders” she added.

Any groups or organizations interested in participating or helping to organize the event should contact Rose Gonzalez at 978-975-2421 or e-mail . Organizers encourage people to come with their own affinity groups, props (wheelbarrows filled with monopoly money), signs and banners, musical instruments, drums, puppets, etc. Activists from out of town needing housing should call ahead.
