March from Baltimore to Washington, DC (english)
11 Apr 2003
Join us on a march to Washington, prtoesting the cost of the war on the global poor. Leave from Baltimore, April 26-28.
March from Baltimore to Washington, DC

We call on all people of conscience to walk with us on a three day march from Baltimore to Washington DC, on Saturday April 26 through Monday April 28.

We walk to mourn the Iraqi men, women, and children who are killed each day this war continues.

We walk to mourn the American lives lost each day to fight this war, which was started by a president we did not elect.

We walk to express our solidarity with those struggling to survive the violence of war and occupation in Iraq, Palestine and throughout the Middle East.

We walk to expose how poor and working class Americans will pay billions of dollars for this war with their tax dollars and social programs, while the richest Americans and corporations receive billions in tax cuts.

We walk to cry out against the fact that:
Americans go to bed hungry while their food stamps and WIC are cut.
Veterans lose their health insurance coverage to budget cuts.
Students struggle to achieve in under-funded schools.
Retired workers’ pensions and benefits are gutted to pay for corporate scandals.
Millions of Americans have no health insurance.
Racial profiling is used to deny citizens and immigrants their constitutionally guaranteed rights.

The lives of poor and working class Iraqis and Americans are being sacrificed by the Bush administration while the rich and powerful speculate on military and corporate stocks from their boardrooms and bunkers.

We walk because we know that safety and security, at home and abroad, can only be achieved through foreign and domestic policies based on human need not corporate greed.

Walk with us to proclaim that another world of peace and justice is possible!!!

PARTICIPATE! Join us for any portion, or for the full distance of 38.5 miles.

Saturday April 26 -- We will leave from Baltimore’s Washington monument at Charles and Monument St. in the morning, and walk via Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Pratt St, and Wilkins Avenue out of the city to Route 1. We will take Rt. 1 through Baltimore County and Howard County to the Jessup area for a total distance of 13-15 miles.

Sunday April 27 -- We will leave the Jessup area and walk 14-17 miles along Rt. 1, through Howard County, Laurel, and Prince George’s County to College Park.

Monday April 28 -- We will walk 9 miles from College Park along Rt. 1, which becomes Rhode Island Ave., to Lafayette Park and the White House. We plan on arriving mid-afternoon. We will return to Baltimore on the MARC commuter train that evening.

The march passes near several major war profiteers such as Lockheed Martin, the National Security Agency, and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

The next meeting of the Baltimore Anti-War Coordinating Committee is Thursday April 17 at 7:30 pm at the Progressive Action Center in Baltimore (1443 Gorsuch Ave, at Kirk Ave).

We are currently working on organizing housing, food, water, bathrooms, and transportation for participants. If you think you may be able to contribute in any of these areas, we need your support!!! We have a wish list of items we need, and we must raise a significant amount of money to make this march a reality.

We are working on making housing and food available for all participants. To assist us in our planning, we request that participants register on our website (or on paper) before the march (preferably by April 19).

We encourage groups to join us along the way, to participate in a specific section of the march, or to organize a feeder march. We are working on making contacts along the march route, please forward us contact information for any people or organizations you may know in that area.

The march is being coordinated by the Baltimore Anti-War Coordinating Committee, and is endorsed by other Maryland and D.C. anti-war organizations.
Please add your endorsement!
