The SHORTWAVE REPORT 4/25/03 ˇListen Globally! (english)
24 Apr 2003
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.4MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Spain, China, Russia, Netherlands, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (April 25) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.4MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:21) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://members.cruzio.com/~frsc/ Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PST) and on Monday at 9amPST.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Spanish National Radio, China Radio International, the Voice Of Russia, Radio Netherlands, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Spain- A referendum to recall Venezvula President Hugo Chavez is still being considered. The new Nigerian President has threatened anyone who protests his recent election, which was considered fraudulent by many observers. The Nicaraguan government has joined Costa Rica at the Organization of American States in condemning human rights abuses in Cuba. At the UN Security Council, France pushed for an immediate suspension of sanctions against Iraq, while UN weapons Inspector Hans Blix said inspections in Iraq need to be carried out by the UN, not the so-called Coaltion Forces.
From China- Further details about the UN Security Council discussion about who should look for weapons of mass destruction in post-war Iraq. Many in the UN feel that if the US were to say they had found the weapons, then the report would not be credible.
From Russia- An observer describes a meeting in Denver concerning the use of depleted uranium weapons in the current war on Iraq, and the ongoing after-effects of previous use in Iraq and the Balkans. The commentator states that 300 metric tons of depleted uranium weaponry were used in the first war in Iraq, and that much more has been used in the current war.
From Netherlands- While the Iraqi protests against US military occupation continue to grow, there are reports of a US plan to revive an old pipeline direct from Iraq to Israel. The pipeline would be used to deliver oil to Israel and the Mediterranean.
From Cuba- Israel has been accused of intentionally murdering an AP cameraman, following the targeting of a British Human Shield, and the crushing with a bulldozer of American Rachel Corey. Following an Australian TV report, the US has admitted that some of the uncharged prisoners in Guantanemo Bay are under 16 years old, in breach of the Geneva Conventions. Then a Viewpoint about the absence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the excuse Bush and Blair used for invading Iraq in the face of worldwide opposition.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
