Rally in Support of the First Amendment Rights to Free Speech and Assembly!

Noon, Saturday April 26, 2003
State Senator Brian Lees' District Office, 527 Main Street, Indian Orchard, MA

State Senator Brian Lees (R-Springfield) has filed legislation that will require protesters to pay the law enforcement costs of their
demonstrations. According to the Boston Globe, "Under his proposal,
protesters who block the flow of traffic would face a $50 fine and could be arrested. If convicted, they would be forced to pay the cost of the police officer who arrested them as well as the court fees."
("Massachusetts State Senator Seeks to Charge War Protesters for Costs," 4/12/03, p. A1).

Senator Lees says he is "sick of protesters who believe they are above
the law."

Join us in a peaceful, nonviolent demonstration to remind Senator Lees
(and all others who are attacking our civil liberties) what the law of
the land actually says. Specifically:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free
exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press; or the right of the people
peaceably to assemble, and to petition the
government for a redress of grievances." (First
Amendment to the Constitution)

We will be presenting Senator Lees with a framed copy of the First
Amendment. If he or a member of his staff is not there to receive it, we will leave it with local law enforcement officials with a request that it be held for him until he can make it to the station to pick it up at his leisure.

If you are concerned about the encroachment on our civil liberties, or
think you might want to demonstrate against any of a number of harmful
government policies in the months or years to come (e.g., millions
without health care, unaffordable housing, another illegal war, a failed "war on drugs," a corrupt criminal "justice" system, corporate attacks on organized labor, environmental devastation, the widening gap between the ultra-rich and the rest of us, etc., etc.), PLEASE JOIN US!! For more information, e-mail Patrick Keaney at ;. If people are interested in arranging rides from Boston, please reply ASAP.
