Are We having Fun Yet?
07 Nov 2000
My Irish Bostonian friend in Berkeley buys the beer.
After publishing my "Consciousness Problem..." piece on the Boston-IMC, I took a walk on Berkeley's northside. I spotted Tom Noonan in La Val's, a popular pizza n' sports I went inside to say hello. Noonan, a Bostonian out here writing and enjoying the mild weather, bursts out laughing at the sight of me, and asks me how I can be taking all of this presidential election bullshit so seriously, and proceeds to buy us three pitchers of Red Sail. Ignoring the Packers-Vikings football game until the last amazing play that gives Green Bay the victory, he proceeds to tell me about his incredible Irish family history, and after draining three pitchers together, I get about two minutes to point out that my Germanic heritage is also Celtic. He explains that nobody in Boston gives a goddam about any of it, because the indigenous Celtic population are a culture unto themselves, and that only an idiot would make an enemy arguing about whatever the fuck happens in Washington D.C. He went on to explain to me that the students/Greens/and the Kennedy's are irrelevant to the whole social fabric in Boston, and that the only thing I ever said to him that showed any intelligence was my appreciation for the Roisan Dubh Irish bar on State Street. He complimented me, by saying that at 51, it's about time I started to enjoy life! He's supporting Nader. After listening to this for two hours, I am now more convinced than ever that boycotting the election is the most enlightened thing I can do! So, I gave the other side a fair hearing, and I would appreciate it if the Cambridge-Boston-Greens would appreciate the fact that the no compromise/direct action/masked up/anti-globalization/green anarchy approach is AT LEAST as valid as voting for Ralph, getting the fucking federal money to continue the Green effort to infinity, and being liberal. I mean, I'm playing fair! So, if the anarchists take up my offer to give me "mutual cooperation' to relocate to Boston, how about if Jon Chance and the rest of you reformers agree to a blowout post election party? We ought to be working together. This is probably as generous as I'm ever going to get. You should take it. Craig Stehr
