*Meta-Sonic Relay is a monthly even of live music and discussion happenning at the Lucy Parsons Center; we present live improvised music in a subversive context, seeking a critical outlook on the way music is produced and consumed in a society dominated by capital in order to foster communication between those involved in "radical" music and those in "radical" politics.

-------About the musicians---------

*MICHEL DONEDA is a rare and, through his far-flung travels, an atypical musician. Since the eighties, that is, after twenty years of European improvised music had already past, Doneda began to open a new path without precedent on the soprano saxophone. Throughout these years he has been his search has been evolving, multiplying his experiences with musicians, dancers, poets, and artists of all continents. From his travels in Africa, South America, during his trips to Japan, Asia and throughout Europe, he developed a nomadic approach, outside the common path of improvisation. Traversing the continents, all the while open to the diversity of musical experience, has made his voice unique and thoroughly contemporary.
Doneda is well-known in Europe for his performances, often at open-air and unusual interior sites. He is a frequent collaborator with Le Quan Ninh, percussionist, who lives not far from him in Toulouse, and organizes concerts with dancers and actors. He has also recorded extensively, around forty cd's and records, the latest one with Boston soprano sax player Bhob Rainey. He is touring the US with Jack Wright, with whom he played in Toulouse last fall, and will be performing with Le Quan Ninh at the Victoriaville Festival in Canada. We are very fortunate that he will be able to bring his music to us on this trip.

*SERGE BAGHDASSARIAN, guitar, electronics, and BORIS BALTSCHUN sampler, electronics, together form Shevadnaze, a duo based in Berlin for the past four years. An integral part of the new Berlin scene, they play regularly with robin hayward, kai fagaschinski, axel dörner, conny bauer, andrea neumann, fabrizio spera, alessandro bosetti, and tony buck, to mention those who might be also known in the states.

After arriving in Berlin they began to work not only as a duo but also with the quartet Ilinx with which they performed at the FMP's totalmusicmeeting 2000 Festival, and shortly after recorded a cd for FMP. [FMP is Frei Musik Produktion, the major German free improv and free jazz label since the 1960's, and is the organizer of the major German festival since then]

Besides developing a music inspired by contemporary composed,
electro-acoustic and improvisation, they began to collaborate with a number of instrumentalists/composers. Among these were trombone and cello player Günther Christmann, with whom they recorded the cd mal d'archive, which was released on Christmann's label.

In May 2003 they will be touring the US with saxophonist Jack Wright of
Boulder Colo, whom they met and played with when he toured Germany in Oct. 2002.
An mp3 is available at:
*JACK WRIGHT, from Boulder Colo., is one of the more outrageous saxophonists and musical personalities of the continent. Continuously on tour, or organizing the next one, he has been called the Johnny Appleseed of free improvisation. The Washington Post says, "In the rarefied, underground world of experimental free improvisation, saxophonist Jack Wright is king". He plays alto, tenor, and soprano saxes, contra-alto clarinet, and piano, in every possible direction, but rarely what is recognizable.

Wright's focus is on live performance: "The improv tradition I represent puts a premium on what can happen THIS night that has never happened, for me as player and for listeners." He currently visits and explores sound with over fifty partners around the country and in Europe. He has released numerous cd's, especially in recent years, with his partners Bob Marsh, Bhob Rainey, Kurt Heyl, Tom Djll, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Bob Falesch, and many others.

A recent review in a German publication, Bad Alchemy, had this to say:
"Wright does not make music, he embodies it, he transforms it with a naiveté of another order. It grows into a sound river, he is part of the diaphragm through which the heterogeneous whispers."

He can be heard on an mp3 as a soloist:
