A picket line is now showing at the Somerville Theater.

Projectionists decided to unionize in order to address concerns about making only minimum wage with no benefits, as well as a concern about the air quality and lack of ventilation in projection booths.

After six of the theater's seven projectionists met with IATSE Local 182 Rep. Glennn Dansker, five signed cards stating their willingness to be represented by the union without a formal NLRB election. Workers then gave theater owner Melvin Fraiman 24 hours notice to voluntarily recognize the union before they went on strike. Fraiman's lawyer told Dansker that the owner would not voluntarily recognize the union and would be waiting for an NLRB election. Workers decided to take action rather than wait the 60 days required for an NLRB election, during which time Fraiman could hire anti-union workers and union-busters or fire current workers. Workers have 30 days in which they can legally strike for union recognition and not be fired.

Friends of the Somerville Projection Workers are asking supporters to come rally and help on the picket lines starting at 5pm, Friday and Saturday, May 9-10.
