A billboard in Worcester, MA was dramatically altered today, sending a message of opposition to the federal tax cuts that have led to deficits and subsequent slashing of government services. The billboard that was modified shows a photograph of a firefighter covered in soot with the text "When others ran out, he rushed in." The alteration added the text "When rich guys got a tax cut, he got laid off." Firefighters in Worcester and across the country are facing severe cuts in funding as cities and states endure one of the worst fiscal crises since the Great Depression. This protest came as the US House of Representatives today passed a $550 billion package of new tax cuts, which would overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest Americans.

This billboard message is the latest in a string of recent billboard alterations in Worcester.

Dude, experimental currencies are great but.. (english)

...In Worcester we're going to have cuts in fire departments next year. If triple-deckers weren't built with trees we wouldn't need so many firefighters. But they are, and if we don't have solid fire departments in our cities folks are going to die, and they probably won't be rich white folks.

I am okay with firefighters getting paid in good old-fashioned greenbacks for the time being. So long as they get paid and people's lives get saved.

Firefighters are the only people in uniform who are not going to bust your ass. They are just gonna save your life.

I like small government too, but in the near future, the only thing that is going to replace centralized taxation is corporate tyranny. We need to make sure the rightwing ideologues behind these cuts get voted OUT next year. Then we'll have some room to breathe for our pet projects.

God bless Worcester. peace.

This is very nicely done! The type-face even seems to match! I think that regardless of what one thiks about altering the billboard itself, or how much access one has to other billboards, it's a great example of jamming a message from the dominant culture and framing the issue in a way that people will relate to.
