Small Gathering in Hartford Against Florida Voting Irregularities -- Part 2
12 Nov 2000
The Connecticut State Capitol Building in Hartford was the site of a small demonstration against irregularities in Florida's recent Presidential vote. Approximately fifteen people gathered on a cold, overcast New England afternoon, holding signs and exchanging views. The event took place at 1pm on Saturday, November 11, 2000.
One of the demonstrators, Sylvia Halkin, held a sign that read "Count All Votes". (In this photo she is being interviewed by a reporter for WVIT-TV.) Ms Halkin advised that people be patient and wait until all votes are counted, including absentee votes from abroad. "I just want democracy to work," she said, adding "There are too many weird things going on in Florida." This is why she said she supports a re-vote in Palm Beach County. When asked to name her party affiliation, Ms. Halkin replied that she is "usually a Democrat", but also said that she would accept either a Bush or a Gore outcome. Regarding the Electoral College, Ms. Halkin said that she could see both sides of the question of keeping it or scrapping it, but in the end she said she would prefer a direct popular vote.
