open letter to my congressman, 6th district (english)
04 Jun 2003
it's time for everyone to keep your eyes on the prize and keep sending your letters to our elected representatives. resotre our democracy now!
an open letter to my congressman, 6th district, 4 June 2003:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BEGIN LETTER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Office of Congressman John F. Tierney
120 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Rep. Tierney,

I applaud your recent move to disallow offshore subcontracting for military expenditures. Indeed, I wish you would explore this matter farther and seek legal actions against corporations that have deliberately steered our tax dollars into their offshore shell companies for personal profit. Such organizations and the individuals who run them are betraying the interests, the trust, and the security of us all.

In addition, I am extremely concerned by the recent spate of revelations about the obviously deceptive use of stale, doctored, or downright false intelligence information by the Bush administration as an excuse to launch an invasion of Iraq. Regardless of what I think about holding dictators, such as Saddam Hussein, accountable, the citizens of the United States must NOT be deceived by our elected representatives. For all the talk about restoring dignity to the office of the Presidency, the Bush camp have done nothing but besmirch that office with their distortions.

Today, the Guardian Newspaper has an article in which Paul Wolfowitz is quoted as saying: "The most important difference between North Korea and Iraq is that economically, we just had no choice in Iraq. The country swims on a sea of oil." Combined with Wolfowitz's recent admission that the the Bush administration fixed upon WMD as a reason for invasion of Iraq because it was the "only reason that everyone could agree on" makes the entire motivation for the U.S. campaign look illegitimate. The United States, already viewed with increasing dislike by other nations, is now made to look like nothing more than a lying, grasping bully.

I strongly urge you to join Rep. Henry Waxman and Rep. Dennis Kucinich to press for full disclosure, not only of the so-called intelligence that was relied upon in the Bush administrationís buildup to war, but also to fully disclose previously requested testimony to the 9-11 commission. The White House, under Bush and Cheney, has turned into a lockbox. The current occupants repeatedly refuse to release documents which they are required to do by law. Is this country now taken over by lunatics? Is there no constitution or rule of law? Are we all going to be branded terrorists under the stipulations of the "Patriot Act" because we demand that the President of the United States uphold and protect the laws and the consitution of our country? Instead I see a President who avoids his own obligations while calling all who disagree with him "enemies of the state". Well, I donít know what you call this kind of behavior, but I call it treason.

Where does this end, Congressman Tierney? Where does this end?

It is my considered opinion that our nation has been hijacked by a group of people with special interests. I am calling upon you to fight against the tide of these powerful interests and to restore our democracy! We are losing this battle. Our civil liberties are being threatened while our treasury is looted. And where does the money go? It goes into the pockets of military contractors, and then vanishes into the night! Our country is now facing ruin. Not only fiscal ruin, but the emnity of the entire world population.

It is unconscionable for the United States, the most powerful nation on earth, to run riot with our superior military force based on flimsy half-baked evidence. We must address the fact that too much of our resources, far too much, goes into ceaseless military contracts. These must be reduced so that our tax money can be PROPERLY spent on rebuilding our great country. To go on spending such incredible, ridiculous sums--the Pentagon has LOST TRACK OF ONE TRILLION US DOLLARS!!--is outrageous, and will not stand. It is long since time that the strutting neo-liberal and neo-con hawks had their wings clipped. As my representative in Congress, even though it takes formidable nerve, I am beseeching you to stand up and do what's right.

Do not let our nation fall into fascism under the baleful gaze of the current President. He has never won my confidence or respect, and at this point he is throwing our entire nation onto the trash heap of history.

Sincerely yours,

Merrick Lex Berman
